Tacos and tequila have been intrinsically linked in cuisine since the early 1880s, when a mouth-frothing President Rutherford B. Hayes demanded a tortilla- and tequila-filled piñata for his Mexico-themed 59th birthday party. Fill yourself on both delicacies with today's Groupon: for $12, get $25 worth of tacos, margaritas, and more at Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila, located in Old Town Scottsdale.
Cien Agaves offers the one-two punch of potent, spicy tacos and stiff but flavorful tequilas, with around 100 different brands of the Mexican agave-based alcohol. Spirited booze-adventurers can choose tequila such as La Cofradia's anejo tequila ($14), aged in oak for more than a year, while margarita-loving whistle-wetters can request a margarita made with any of Cien Agaves' specialty tequilas ($2 in addition to the tequila price). Diners content with pure margarita magic can opt for the chili-pepper-infused habanero-lime margarita ($11) or the pineapple-powered Piña Pleasure margarita ($10), each mixed with fresh limes and house-made simple syrup. In the realm of tortillas and tacos, Cien Agaves' chipotle-marinated tinga taco ($3.95), packed with shredded chicken inside a maize tortilla, has proven to be a change-gaming choice. Argue with your dining partners about the 100 greatest green salsas of all time over an appetizer such as the homemade guacamole ($7.75), or book a reservation in your belly for a dessert such as the caramel-drizzled churro sundae ($5.95).
Find Cien Agaves by searching out the wood-paneled, saloon-themed building that has appeared in eight of your last nine dreams. Cien Agaves' brightly decorated space brims with Mexican-American art from painter Moisés, while empty tequila bottles lining the wall serve as reminders of the Great Tequila Bottle Landslide of '03.
This Groupon is not valid for Taco Tuesdays, happy hour, or other specials.
- The house margarita...was so damn good that we pledged our eternal loyalty on the spot. The Jose Cuervo-based drink tastes just as good as the top-shelf margs we've had...And unlike some lesser Mexican spots, Cien Agaves would never dream of using bottled sour mix instead of fresh squeezed lime. Perfecto. – Phoenix New Times
- If you visit Old Town Scottsdale (or live anywhere in the Phoenix area), put Cien Agaves toward the top of your “to visit/see/do” list; or as their T-shirts dictate: “Save Water, Drink Tequila.” – Ryan Kelley, Examiner.com
Cien Agaves curates a cultured and diverse selection of authentic Mexican specialties including 13 taco varieties and 100 pure agave tequilas. The bar staff carefully selects the handcrafted reposado, añejo, and blanco varieties, which lend their spicy warmth to mixed drinks that have garnered the Phoenix New Times's 2011 award for Best Specialty Margaritas. Diehard tequila lovers can also make the restaurant's "Tequila Hall of Fame," reserved for those who taste each of the 100 tequilas. Citrus-marinated steak and beer-battered shrimp comprise a few of the tacos, available by the handful or platter.
The multileveled restaurant features catwalk seating in the upper level and an outdoor beer garden with stone fire pits that crackle along with the laughter of evening guests. During regularly scheduled tasting events, Cien Agaves features three specialty tequila artisans and welcomes guests to sample their craft. Representatives from each company are available at the events to answer questions and encourage responsible tasting.
