The Deal

  • $118 for a full-day coach-class train ride for two adults ($210 value)

This deal is valid for one of two trips:

  • Trip #2: Antonito, CO, to Chama, NM, by train; return by motor coach. 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
  • Trip #5: Chama, NM, to Antonito, CO, by train; return by motor coach. 10 a.m.–5:50 p.m.

Reservations cannot be made online; must call (888) 286-2737 to reserve.

Each trip includes a hot lunch served in Osier, CO. Buyers can upgrade to Tourist Car Class or Parlor Car Class for an additional fee when they call to make their reservations. They may also purchase additional children’s tickets for $49 per child plus a 5% historic preservation fee.

The company recommends making reservations as soon as possible after purchase, since trips fill up quickly. They also recommend bringing sunglasses or other eye protection, hats, and sunscreen. This is in part because of the popular open-air Vista Gondola Car, where smoke and cinders sometimes float in the air.

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

Most National Historic Landmarks are quite literally set in stone. The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, though, is an exception: its steam-operated trains move constantly, chugging along a stretch of rail extending from Colorado to New Mexico.

1. The experience is steeped in history.

Originally built in 1880, the line was an engineering marvel for its time. It was also essential to the booming silver mining industry of the time, although no modern riders have stumbled on more than a few metric tons of ore yet.

2. The ride is scenic.

A complete ride passes through 64 miles of mountain passes, steep gorges, and sprawling flatlands. It's even more beautiful on sunset rides, when everything is suffused with golden light.

3. Passengers can enjoy a romantic Sunset Train ride

The line's "Cumbre Sunset Train" rides begin in Chama, NM and climb through the mountains to Cumbres Pass at 10,015 ft. Enjoy the live music and the beautiful, sunset views of the Rocky Mountains.

4. There's lunch. Serious lunch.

Morning rides ferry passengers to an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch at Osier station, featuring eats worthy of Thanksgiving dinner: whole, golden-brown roasted turkeys, for instance, as well as salads and three types of pie.

Customer Reviews

What a wonderful day trip!!!

Wonderful experience and beautiful scenery. The food was really very good. Long day but worth it.
Robin S. · June 15, 2016
It is a long day, but worth it. The second half (ending in Antonito) is the best scenery because you see two tunnels, the Toltec gorge and the beautiful river valley.
