Named the 2008 Art Glass Association Retailer of the Year, 30-year industry veteran Karen Carney teaches crafters of all skill levels how to make beautiful works of stained-glass art. After a brief overview of how to work with glass and what to do if it demands a raise, Karen supplies each student with dichroic glass, which refracts light into distinct wavelengths or colors depending on the angle of illumination. Glass stainers then pick one of several designs and forge their sundry materiel into beveled sun catchers. After cleaning the resulting masterpiece with a finishing compound, students attach it to a large suction cup and proudly hang their sun catcher in a solar-flooded window, where it will lure other class-M stars to earth and prolong summer well into December.
Small classes of 4–10 students ensure that each budding glass wrangler gets one-on-one guidance. All materials—glass, adhesive, and sand-melting lasers—are included in the cost of the lesson. Classes for parties of five or more can be arranged on qualifying Saturdays, in case Custom Stained Glass students wish to bring along the rest of their book clubs or Viking longboat crews.
