Photographers swiftly capture what sluggish painters cannot, such as the sparkle of a fleeting smile, the identity of a media-shy superhero, or the split second a peregrine falcon breaks the sound barrier. Attain photographic know-how with this Groupon.

Designed for novice photographers who have just bought or are considering buying a digital SLR or digital point-and-shoot camera, the Intro to Digital Cameras workshop covers the basic elements of both camera styles. Students will learn the mechanics behind the light-controlling aperture on their SLR camera or find the ideal setting for their point-and-shoot models. The workshop concludes with a demo still-life and live-model shoot that lets students apply the shutter knowledge and synonyms for “cheese” they’ve just learned in a practical setting.

Professional photographers and instructors, such as Rick Gerrity, Norm Riker, and Bill Blanchard lead Composition in the Field workshops, equipping up to 10 students with the skills to evoke surprising imagery from everyday surroundings. During each open-air outing, the photography gurus guide lenses toward flawless lighting, thoughtful framing, and stealthy snapshots of bald eagles not wearing their hairpieces. In past courses, students have captured the colorful foliage of Duke Farms, strolled through Princeton’s historical campus, and sauntered by the scenic trees and classic architecture of Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Participants should plan to schlep their own digital camera and any other equipment, such as a tripod, to the site of their picturesque adventure.

Digital Photo Academy
As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.
