When Saint Anthony of Padua died in 1231, his tongue was placed in a reliquary, awaiting the day when it could be jump-started back to life to enjoy a good tarragon chicken-salad sandwich. Today’s Groupon will have your still-connected tongue wagging as well as Saint Anthony’s: $25 of food and drink from Druthers Cafe & Catering for $10. The deal is good for dine-in, carryout, or delivery at both of Druthers’ downtown and Fredericksburg Road locations (delivery is free within three miles).

Everything’s bigger in Texas, and, as Druthers proves, sometimes fresher, healthier, and made-from-scratchier. Family owned and operated, Druthers gets its name from serving its customers homemade gourmet sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, and desserts made with fresh fruit, verdant vegetables, and bacon straight off the vine. The Unforgettable Druthers sandwich ($7.99), Druthers’ most popular sandwich, earns its prom-king votes with a combination of turkey, bacon, sprouts, mayo, avocado, tomato, and cream cheese on multigrain bread. The tarragon chicken salad ($6.99) uses the sweet French herb to punch up the poultry-based classic, while an assortment of desserts includes a brownie ($1.50) deserving of more than a few merit badges and a lemon bar ($1.50) with flavor squeezed into it like a clown car of citrus.

Druthers’ recently opened bistro, downtown near the River Walk, offers the same items as the Fredericksburg Road location, with the exception of burgers and baked potatoes. Both locations now serve breakfast between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and offer morning staples such as pastries, bagels, and breakfast sandwiches.

Reviews

The San Antonio Express-News has this to say about Druthers Cafe:

  • Yes, you'll want to order that brownie, a fudgy bit of perfection topped with chocolate ganache…. We also loved the cheese steak, in which tender slivers of beef sirloin and grilled onions shared a baguette with provolone cheese and a fabulous roasted pepper sauce. – Karen Haram

Three Yelpers and three Yahoo! Local reviewers give Druthers Cafe 4.5 stars; 78% of Urbanspooners like it:

  • Delicious. A friend introduced me to this restaurant/cafe a few months ago. At least 5 times a month I'm calling in to order their "Cranberry almond salad, add chicken". Super yummy. – S N., Yelp
  • I have been coming here for awhile, the food is OUTSTANDING, everything is made fresh--the salad I had was just great. You can tell they use fresh produce. The brownie is a chocolate-lovers dream. – Ann S., Yahoo! Local
  • Quaint, lunch spot that has a wide assortment of sandwiches and burgers. I had the gobbler which is a turkey dinner mixed all into one sandwich…Fresh baked goods and soups were also tasty. Bad part: closed on weekends. – Geo Duck Tongue, Urbanspoon
