Countryside Resort with Walking Trails and Golf Courses

In pleasant autumn weather, it's possible to play on any of three nearby 18-hole golf courses at Carriage Ridge Resort at Horseshoe Valley. But even when the courses are covered with snow, they serve a great function to guests: there's an entryway to ski-in, ski-out trails leading from Carriage Ridge resort to downhill runs and terrain parks. Whatever the season, there is a wealth of possibility for outdoor recreation at Carriage Ridge Resort, which rests on a ridge overlooking Horseshoe Valley, one of the most popular outdoor recreation destinations close to Toronto. Nearby activities include ziplining and mountain biking.

An endless sea of fields and forests encloses the resort and creates a sense of peace and privacy to set the tone for a relaxing retreat. The hotel offers various programs to help guests to stay active, too. Aqua fit classes are held each morning at the heated indoor pool, where the water serves as natural resistance during exercise regimens. When not frolicking at the children's pool and playground, youngsters can test their wits in hosted scavenger hunts.

Housed in three separate buildings, Carriage Ridge's condo-style accommodations feature spacious living rooms and one- and two-bedroom units feature fireplaces, bathrooms with jacuzzi-style tubs, and full kitchens appointed in light wood furnishings. Private balconies also extend from the one- and two-bedroom suites.

Oro-Medonte, Ontario: Small Country Town with Thriving Ski and Golf Culture

The rural town of Oro-Medonte is located one hour north of Toronto and about twenty minutes north of Barrie. Oro-Medonte also marks what is likely the northernmost point of the Underground Railroad, a network of locations where escaped African-American slaves stopped for food and shelter. There was already a thriving population of African-American residents in Oro-Medonte around 1812, and in 1819, the local government set aside land for runaway slaves along Lake Simcoe. About 10 minutes south of the resort resides the Oro African Methodist Episcopal Church, a tiny wooden structure that is listed as a national historic site.

A scenic drive from Toronto, this quiet town is a haven for outdoor adventure for those who want to escape the usual bustle of the city. Within 20 minutes of the hotel, three ski centers offer manicured downhill trails, snowboarding super pipes, and 65 kilometers of varied nordic terrain. In warmer months, it's possible to navigate the landscape via a network of hiking and biking trails. Or guests can train for sandcastle-building competitions in the bunkers at 1 of 18 area golf courses.
