Freeport, Grand Bahama: Tropical Oasis Rich in Wildlife

Located on the southern coast of Grand Bahama island, Freeport is a Caribbean tourism mecca that’s home to three national parks and some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches. Temperatures rarely dip below 65 degrees Fahrenheit, attracting sunbathers as well as snorkelers and deep-sea fishers.

If you can tear yourself away from the sand and surf, consider visiting the Garden of the Groves for a stroll through lush vegetation inhabited by tropical birds, turtles, and fish. Farther east, orchids and ming trees line the trails and boardwalks at Lucayan National Park, a 40-acre property where you can also explore an extensive underwater cave system.

Perched on a peninsula just outside Freeport, the Port Lucaya Marketplace comprises 80 stores selling local sundries and services. At the west end, artisans craft jewelry, furniture, and souvenirs from dried palm fronds and wood.

We've been going here for almost 20 years. The hotel has not been renovated in that time. It's nice, but not fancy. If you are looking for a quick get-away with not a lot of frills... this is your place. We love it because it is easy to get to and not crowded like The Atlantis.

I enjoyed my stay. The staff was friendly. Although, the taxes due were charged to the credit card I had to hold the room and not the one we requested be used upon check out. Plus, the amount was different (higher) than the bill I received. I recommend a little clearer sign regarding the sports activities. We realized later that they were not associated with the hotel. We had a bad experience with them, as they were unorganized and rude. Since your hotel staff is so friendly, I would hate for future guests to think that they are part of the hotel. All in all, I enjoyed my stay. The hotel was beautiful, clean and relaxing.

We totally enjoyed our 7 days at Grand Lucayan. The resort property is gorgeous. We especially loved spending afternoons at the infinity pool at the east end of the "campus". Some days we shared the pool with only a few other guests. The beach was cleaned every day so it was great to swim in the surf too. Every one of the staff members we encountered was polite and very accommodating. When we checked in, I asked for an upper floor room, and we were provided with one on the top, tenth floor. From that venue, sunrises and sunsets over the ocean were amazing. The rooms were a little frayed around the edges, but very clean. The location across from the Marketplace provided a great variety of restaurants we could walk to. This was a terrific Groupon deal for us. It definitely was what brought us to the Bahamas & Grand Lucayan.
