Chaka Khan: The 10-time Grammy-winning “Queen of Funk” first dominated the airwaves with her band Rufus, unleashing hits such as “Tell Me Something Good” and “Ain’t Nobody.” But life after Rufus didn’t slow down, with the Artist Formerly Known As Yvette Marie Stevens doing plenty of genre-hopping and hit-making of her own, including the club classic “I’m Every Woman.”
Avant: Channeling Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, and R. Kelly, the self-described “new voice of modern soul” is best known for sensual, high-thread-count slow jams such as “Separated,” “Break Ya Back,” and “Makin’ Good Love.”
Tamar Braxton: While the R&B chanteuse first came into the limelight as part of the band (and family) The Braxtons, she’s found plenty of ways to stand out as a solo artist. 2012’s Love and War earned her three Grammy nominations, currently she is starring on the hit show “Dancing with the Stars” and she’s even ventured into reality TV with appearances on Braxton Family Values and Tamar & Vince.
