Hip Hop Nutcracker

  • A Holiday Mashup: The Nutcracker is an undeniable holiday classic. But choreographers Ale Martinez and Issac Sanders recognize that not everyone digs ballet. Their solution? Mix the iconic pieces of the story and Tchaikovsky’s score (with a twist) to explosive hip-hop dance. The performance is part of the theatre’s 50th anniversary celebration.
  • The Pieces: A cast of 17 all-star hip-hop arists from The Tribe and Poise’n join Peninsula Ballet Theatre dancers to transport the score and story with a contemporary flavor. Sanders and Martinez, dance partners who met at the Academy of Villains, incorporate their dance and hip-hop backgrounds into the performance, fusing love, holiday spirit, community, and even a little magic. Martinez, a Bay Area native, has traveled the globe teaching dance and has appeared in Americas Got Talent Season 7 and was crowned “Fake Off Champions” with her dance crew in the show Fake Off.
  • The Story: Clara receives a prized wooden nutcracker during a holiday party at her Victorian home. Once she falls asleep, her dream takes into a world with wizards, toy soldiers, mice, and a sugar plum fairy. But instead of a candy land, Clara finds herself in a modern hip-hop land.

Customer Reviews

Wow!We expected a good show, but this far exceeded any bar we could have set. The action was constant and the choreography showcased an impressive, variety of talents by all of the dancers. The music wove classical and hip hop in fun way. We'll definitely see their Nut Cracker. Theater was tricky to find if you aren't familiar with the campus, but it is professional quality with an intimate feel.
