Since The Wiz premiered on Broadway in 1974, its energetic, soulful reimagining of The Wizard of Oz earned it seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Charleston Stage at the Dock’s rendition of The Wiz takes familiar elements of the original production and pushes the reimagining even further, recasting the Yellow Brick Road as a rhythmically inclined quartet of yellow-suited hip hop dancers, whose body language leads Dorothy and her newfound friends to the Emerald City. The company also infuses life into the infamous swirling tornado, which comprises colorfully costumed singers and dancers that spin and sway to create a breathtaking visual. A full jazz orchestra backs each of the musical’s show-stopping tunes, such as the joyful, funky “Ease on Down the Road” and the spiritual-inspired “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News,” belted out by Crystin Gilmore in the role of Evillene, the Wicked Witch.
The first American building specifically designed for theatrical performances, the Historic Dock Street Theatre has survived the Great Fire of 1740 and the hygiene of John Wilkes Booth’s dad to thrive as Charleston’s premier cultural institution. The venue recently received a $19 million makeover and now sports crystalline acoustics, seismic security, and fresh new seats for stellar views of The Wiz’s charismatic characters and stagehands playing rock-paper-scissors in the wings.
