Running was popular in Europe long before it caught on in America, which is why most races are measured in kilometers instead of miles and why most of the Pilgrims were eaten by bears. Race to the top of the food chain with today's Groupon: for $10, you get an entry ticket to the Heart and Sole 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, February 25 (a $20 value).
The Heart and Sole 5K Walk/Run seeks to raise community awareness of the perils of heart disease by hosting a 5K run that sends a portion of the proceeds to the American Heart Association. After an 8 a.m. registration, the race commences at 9 a.m., as competitors trot along on 5K treks to the finish line. While all racers receive complimentary T-shirts, special prizes are bestowed on participants who place first, second, third, and sweatiest. In between cheers for their sprinting comrades, nonrunning visitors can obtain on-site health checks administered by health professionals or peruse merchant booths advertising heath and community services. Geared toward youngsters, a mile-long fun course supplies little racers with enthralling, healthy activities such as tugs of war with ropes made of slippery banana peels.
