We spoke with Waxing Room owner CherylAnn Gutierrez about how it feels to have your hair removed with thread and what you can do to make the process quicker and easier.
What does threading feel like?
CherylAnn compares the sensation to tweezing, "but many hairs at a time." As the aesthetician works strands of cotton thread around the brows and lips, a quick twist uproots an entire line of hair at the follicle. CherylAnn says her staff can help soothe away any sting afterwards by applying ice, cortisone, a gentle massage to the treated areas.
How quickly can your aestheticians thread a line of hair?
"We've never timed it," she says while laughing, "but very quickly."
Which is better: threading or waxing?
CherylAnn refuses to take sides: each one has a place. Threading may be especially useful for people who are allergic to certain waxes or who have sensitive skin due to, for example, a recent chemical peel. But her general advice is "try each one." She says fans of threading tend to believe the process gives aestheticians greater control, allowing them to create better definition, straighter lines, and more dramatic angles than are possible with waxing. But the main reason CherylAnn offers threading is that she knows it's ultimately a personal preference, and she "wants to be able to serve everyone."
What can clients do to get the best results?
During appointments, clients will be asked to slightly stretch the skin around their eyebrows so that it's flat and level. According to CherylAnn, the most important thing you can do at this time is to hold your skin so that it's as taut as possible. She says this allows the aesthetician to go line by line with greater speed and accuracy, which minimizes any potential discomfort.
Ever wonder what it would've been like if history class included beer as a part of the curriculum? With Chicago Beer Experience, you don't have to wonder. The company seamlessly blends history lessons of storied Chicago with beer samples—often from local breweries—on neighborhood tours.
During the Lakeview & Lincoln Park Beer Tasting and Bar Tour, groups visit multiple hot spots, including an Irish pub, a specialty beer and wine store, and a pre-Prohibition punk-rock bar with an impressive beer list. During their bar-hopping, they'll learn about the city's first brewery and how brewing practices have evolved since then to turn Chicago into a sought-after beer city.
The Bucktown & Wicker Park Beer Tasting and Bar Tour follows a similar formula, this time with visits to a video-game bar, an established neighborhood watering hole, the mansions along Beer Baron Row, and a bar featured on NBC's Chicago Fire. The neighborhoods' blend of historic immigration and modern popularity share the spotlight with samples of ales, pilsners, and porters, enlightening patrons on brewing techniques passed down from the Old World.
The company's newest tour, the Loop & South Loop tour, takes tourists through some of the most iconic and historic locales in the loop and south loop. The tour combines beer with Chicago's rich vice history, including gambling, saloons, crime lords like Capone, and other nefarious activities. Stops include an old Capone-era haunt, one of the oldest bars in the city, a blues club run by a legend, and a new microbrewery.
Modern lights hang from the ceiling like glowing mushrooms, illuminating Robert Jeffrey Salon’s beige walls and chestnut wood floors. Amid these cozy accents, licensed manicurist Celina Staniow draws on 18 years of experience to shape and spiff up nails. Adhering to safe and hygienic practices, Celina softens skin with organic soaks and applies chip-resistant Shellac polish. She upgrades treatments with services that address aesthetic and health-related concerns, whether that means adding all-natural polishes to each nail or strengthening nail beds with vegan elixirs and tiny metal shields.

Dr. Shanicka Williams has worn a lot of hats in her career. She's served as a traveling physician, worked with the uninsured in a health center, and currently serves as medical director of Georgia Doty Hepatitis/HIV Community Outreach, Inc. And through it all she's held fast to one belief—that patients should not be made to wait for three hours, only to be rushed through an appointment or given cookie-cutter treatment.
That's exactly the type of treatment Dr. Williams hopes to avoid with Divine Aesthetics Medspa & Wellness Center. She's able to give them the individual time and attention they deserve without adhering to a strict office schedule designed to address the needs of a revolving door of patients. Her medical services include everything from monthly visits for chronic diseases, to medication refills, and even referrals to specialists.
In addition to this medically-oriented service, Divine Aesthetics Medspa & Wellness Center also caters to patrons' overall well being with medspa services. With a membership, the staff can provide a variety of massage modalities and facials. In addition to monthly memberships, they can also perform a variety of a la carte services including massages and facials, as well as waxing services for the bikini area, legs, or an unruly shag carpet.

After gaining success at international salons, fashion shows, and photo shoots, stylists Laurence Hegarty, David Raccuglia, Beth Lloyd, and Sally Raccuglia joined forces to establish the first Art + Science Salon in 1989. Now, more than two decades later, the quartet of hairstylists has cemented their position in the beauty world by opening three locations across Chicago and creating a philosophy to which each salon holds true: provide world-class yet wearable, haircuts.
To meet this goal, each salon is staffed with expert stylists and colorists who must complete the salon's rigorous apprenticeship program, which is based on the European system of blending art with science to create modern, wearable styles. The specialists transform hair with help from products from Mensdept., Bumble and Bumble, American Crew, and Shu Uemera. They also make sure clients go home knowing how to maintain and recreate their dos. To welcome more gentlemen into the salon, Art + Science has unveiled The Barbershop at Art + Science, which offers hot towels, straight-razor shaves, and stylish cuts.
