Q&A with Kat, Stylist And Educator
People go to spas to forget about the outside world. How does your decor help create an atmosphere where visitors can unwind?
The space is very unique, because we're in a warehouse area in West Town. On a first visit, guests wonder if they've come to the right place. However, when people enter our space, they understand why Tsubo is so special. The energy is great. We work with amazing natural light flooding in from those big second-floor warehouse windows. We have epic ceilings, great products dedicated to genuinely repairing the hair, soothing colors, and tons of social/hangout space.
What's the most common beauty mistake you see people make? What would you recommend they do instead?
One of the biggest beauty mistakes is when someone doesn't like their hair and won't change it, whether they're stuck in a dated style or were given something they don't really like. It's important for all of us to remain true to ourselves and allow our styles to reflect who we are, but we also have to allow for some evolution of self. We cannot fear change. It's inevitable.
Communication is important. Photos are key. Stylists are visual people, so we welcome photos, pinterests, anything that will help us share a vision with our guests and achieve the greatest result.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Nearly every staff member at Tsubo is extremely dedicated to education in the industry, and either have educated or currently educate with at least one professional brand in their spare time. We all strive to stay ahead of the latest styles and techniques while reinforcing the strong technical foundations which brought us to where we are today.
After pursuing a media-focused career, during which she worked for MTV and in marketing, advertising, and special events for an entertainment company, Jennie Channer collaborated with her father and brother to open a full-service salon and spa in 2007. Today, the Chicago native's team of skilled stylists, colorists, and spa specialists attracts an assortment of clientele, including a woman who's been coming in every other week since opening day and a 4-year-old girl who refers to each staffer as "girlfriend" or "boyfriend." Clients can choose from a variety of salon-spa services, ranging from haircuts with coloring to pampering packages specifically designed for expectant mothers. Because Blueberry Moon is an Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa, all products are composed of 96% naturally derived ingredients extracted from high-quality botanicals and distilled Mother Nature kisses.
Before officially opening the doors to the public, Jennie put the salon-spa—located inside a building more than 100 years old—through a complete gut renovation to unearth its rich history and hidden brick walls. She then added morsels of local history by installing fixtures she acquired from a local salvage yard, including the former front door of a demolished Gold Coast mansion and an old printing table from historical Printers Row. Jennie has also been modernizing the salon-spa to minimize its effect on the environment, incorporating technologies such as a reverse-osmosis water-filtration system and energy-efficient light bulbs filled with immortal fireflies.

For decades after it opened in 1906, the two-story Russian bathhouse on West Division Street shrouded famous locals such as Al Capone, Saul Bellow, and Nelson Algren in clouds of steam. More than 100 years later, the building underwent a full renovation. In a return chronicled by the Chicago Reader, WGN, and Time Out Chicago, the century-old retreat of the city's powerful was reborn as Red Square.
Today, as perhaps the only traditional Russian bathhouse left in Chicago, Red Square holds its heritage close with two floors of authentic wet and dry saunas (separated into male and female spaces) and a spa. In the traditional banya, cedar-plank walls and three-tiered benches surround brick and granite ovens, where clouds of steam erupt from superheated rocks. But visitors aren't just left to cook; cold-water taps beside each bench and cold-plunge pools that mimic Russian ponds reinvigorate bathers amidst the heat. Spa attendants wander the humid rooms, performing services such as the traditional platza—a rigorous massage and scrub with a bundle of oak, eucalyptus, or birch branches that mimic the relaxing sensation of falling asleep in a tree.
It might come as a surprise to find a spirit-stocked bar in Red Square's café and lounge area. After all, "Many people will tell you it’s a terrible idea to mix alcohol and dehydrating heat chambers," says Time Out's Julia Kramer, "but none of those people are Russian." And so premium vodkas and Moscow Mules flow freely as guests—many of them still in their bathrobes—savor traditional Russian herring and caviar in the mahogany-paneled space, designed to resemble a 19th-century train car. To complete the locomotive vibe, curtained televisions at each booth screen looping footage of the Eastern European countryside and a conductor checks luggage for stowaways every half-hour.
