A medley of traditional American cuisine and authentic German tastes has brightened Jacob Wirth’s festive European dining room since 1868. Menu offerings include the beer-steamed knockwurst and bratwurst platter, as well as Jake’s 8-ounce Angus burger balancing precarious layers of sauerkraut, red cabbage, swiss cheese, and beer-battered onion rings to the wild cheers of bystanders. Forks tuck into Teutonic favorites such as the lemon-butter drizzled wiener schnitzel and the braised beef sauerbraten accompanied by a collage of dill spaetzle, gingersnap gravy, and red cabbage. A German whoopie pie offers an unusual take on the traditional dessert, sandwiching coconut-pecan frosting between two slabs of chocolate cake to complete meals.

On Friday evenings, Jacob Wirth hosts pianist Mel Stiller, a Boston mainstay whose sing-along show has attendees humming and shouting along to hits such as “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” Morgan White Jr. hosts trivia night on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jacob Wirth’s location within the theater district makes it a premier spot for a preshow dinner before heading off to watch Mary Poppins 2: Spoonful of Revenge.

Jacob Wirth

A medley of traditional American cuisine and German tastes has brightened Jacob Wirth, the second oldest restaurant in Boston, since 1868. The kitchen prepares a smattering of traditional offerings, such as paper-thin-sliced pastrami piled high between slabs of sourdough bread, and five types of wursts crowned with red cabbage or sauerkraut. Surrounded by traditional steins and thirsty gnomes, barkeeps pour an extensive selection of imported and domestic beer from tap and bottles.
