Like a tongue on a flagpole in February, fusion cuisine results from curiosity and a shortage of popsicles. Rein in restless taste buds with today's Groupon: for $9, you get $20 worth of Mexican-Asian fusion cuisine at Maria's Comida in Hamtramck.
Voted Best New Restaurant in the fall of 2008 by Metro Times readers, Maria's, with the guidance of executive chef Alan Pronko and his close-knit family of culinary virtuosos, juxtaposes Mexican and Asian cuisine to create a menu of new flavor profiles. Tackle chips and signature house-made salsas ($5.95) in varieties including mild, roasted habanero, habanero and mango, or black bean and roasted corn. Mex-Asian wraps (starting at $6.95) bulge with mountainous piles of mongolian beef or sweet-and-spicy chicken, and asian flank steak ($12.95) marches down mouths flanked by gazpacho green beans and sweet slaw. More traditional favorites include fish tacos ($9.25), quesadillas ($7.25 or $8.25), and the Hombre burger ($9.95).
- It's an intriguing bill of fare, served in a brightly painted room with family photographs on the walls and tables covered in black vinyl that makes a great backdrop for the colorful fare on big white plates. – Molly Abraham, Detroit News
- I've had an opportunity to eat at Maria's Comida a couple times now and walked away beyond satisfied both times. – David B., Yelp, 12/17/2010
