What You'll Get

The Indian subcontinent is a giant piece of naan that drifted slowly through the ocean before slamming its flavors into Eurasia. Align your face's tectonic plates to give the continent a nibble in return with today's deal: for $20, you get $40 worth of casual, chic Indian cuisine at Mela on Tremont Street. This Groupon is valid for dine-in only, and it is not good toward the lunch buffet.

Mela specializes in delectable Indian cuisine that's lighter than the victuals offered at many traditional dining establishments. Its menu is best known for featuring India's answer to the open grill, hot-stone cooking, in which a large, volcanically hot slab of rock is brought to your table. Place marinated lamb chops ($21), prime fillet ($27), or a seafood platter ($24) on the rock, watch it sizzle, and take it off once it's been cooked to perfection. As any backyard barbecuer knows, nothing stimulates conversation like watching meat cook (unless you spring for the Moon Bounce), so bring be sure to bring some friends along, whether they be old pals, new coworkers, or a gang of teeth-baring, anachronistic pickpockets.

For the equally adventurous but less DIY diner, Mela also serves up modern recipes such as the flavorful subz panchmael, which consists of red, yellow, and green peppers; artichokes; asparagus; and bean sprouts stir-fried with panch phoran tomato and green cardamom sauce ($15). Seasoned Indian foodies can sample all their favorites, from fresh-baked naan ($3–$5) to vegetarian vittles such as Mela's specialty baingan bhartha, an eggplant that is baked over open flame, then mashed and sautéed with onions, garlic, ginger, and spices ($13). The spiced and herbed malai kofta consists of veggie balls cooked in creamy nut sauce ($14). Any meat-eaters in tow will find plenty of chicken, lamb, and seafood dishes to sate their carnivore cravings or toss out the window of the local meat-lovers safari wagon. For a one-stop feast, try the mixed grill of sizzling tandoori specialties and kebabs ($11–$24).

Mela is a top-listed Zagat restaurant, getting a 24 (or "excellent") rating for the food. More than 130 Yelpers give the restaurant a four-star average, and 86% of more than 90 Urbanspooners like it. Gayot gives Mela a rating of 12/20:

  • Chicken tika masala is the best this side of the UK. You rarely need a reservation and the friendly staff won't let your glass run dry. – CarolineM0404, Zagat
  • Love Mela's!!! (Indian cuisine) romantic setting: copper covered walls, the floor resembled polished earthenware, billowy shear mauve curtains; small space overlooking Tremont. And the food!!! delicious servings just kept coming. – Betsy Alexandra Vasquez, Urbanspoon
