Dionysus nearly went broke during Mount Olympus's brief experiment with Prohibition, but he was saved when a mountain full of all-powerful gods found it too hard to enforce. Take your tippling to mythical heights with today’s Groupon for wine tastings at MJA Vineyards. Choose from the following options:
• For $5, you get two flights of white wine at the Santa Cruz location (a $10 value).
• For $5, you get two flights of white wine at the Los Gatos location (a $10 value).
• For $8, you get two flights of red wine at the Santa Cruz location (a $16 value).
• For $8, you get two flights of red wine at the Los Gatos location (a $16 value).
MJA Vineyards’ pinot noirs and cabernets weave a purple blanket of flavors around the palate and a sauvignon blanc sings a crisp cantata to carry taste buds through the summer afternoon. Hand-picked wines from the Serene Cellars and DaVine Cellars collections pair the fruity, full-bodied flavors of Napa Valley with the seductive aromas of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Red-wine flights begin with the vineyard’s 2008 Santa Cruz Mountains pinot noir, a light-bodied wine infused with hints of cherries and black currants. A dark foursome of cabernet sauvignon then dons eye shadow and plays tunes of grapevine innocence lost that leave wine glasses clinking for an encore. Passengers on the white-wine flight also get a taste of the pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon, along with two lean and fruity sauvignon blancs.
Twosomes can swish and swallow their samples at each tasting room’s bar or take in the scenery out on the patio. All tastings wrap up with a hot cup of kona coffee that, like a good scrub with a toothbrush or a thin layer of Wite-Out, erases the remnants of wine from tongues. The Santa Cruz tasting room is open daily from noon to 6 p.m., while the Los Gatos tasting room is open Thursday–Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
After 16 years spent with Kona Coffee, MJA Owner Marin Artukovich took up residence in Napa Valley, where he renovated an idyllic estate on the side of Howell Mountain before opening the MJA Tasting Room in March of 2010. With the help of local winemaker Mikael Wargin, Marin’s vineyard produces cabernets, sauvignon blancs, and pinot noirs reflecting the terroir of Napa Valley and the Santa Cruz mountains, with bottles for sale through its very own Serene and DaVine cellars. Cups of house-roasted Hawaiian Kona Coffee cap off each tasting, warming hands and souls inside MJA’s gorgeous brick-walled estate or on a heated patio overlooking the Santa Cruz mountains.
