A Chat with Pike River Studio
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? I have over 40 years of experience as a professional photographer. My career has included commercial, editorial, and wedding photography, but nature is my passion. I have been published in Ducks Unlimited, Birds & Blooms, and WI Trails. For the past five years I have taught at NWTC and at my studio.
Do you provide any materials? What should your students expect to bring? An outline of all major talking points is handed out during lecture and demonstration at my studio. Students need to bring and be competent with a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens equivalent to 300mm, to be successful with wildlife. A ghille suit or camouflage clothing is helpful.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I find great enjoyment in meeting new people who share a passion for wildlife photography. People have been complimenting my photography since I was in high school. Such praise hasn't meant near as much as the first time a student wrote to express profound gratitude for sharing my love of the art.
What do you love most about your job? Being outdoors in wild places with good people. Watching the excitement and pride on students' faces as they review their work on the camera LCD or a laptop. Sitting around the campfire after a good day's shoot and sharing our experiences and good food and drink.
