About RicoMrTattoo Ink
Born and raised in Chicago, tattoo artist RicoMrTattoo (all one word!) grew up admiring his uncle's creative skill and artistry, so much so that he decided to follow in his footsteps. He recalls watching him draw a Garfield character in such detail that he was inspired to study the photo and learn how to create his own. It was then that he began challenging himself to draw without using an eraser. “It taught me patience and how important proportions are to an image.” Through his formative years, he would seek and receive support from close family and friends. “My grandmother had a monthly subscription to Ebony Magazine. I would look through these magazines and draw the models in the fashion section - going as far as designing my own clothing." In fostering these creative talents and challenging his potential, RicoMrTattoo's grandmother brought home a paint by numbers set, "She loved my passion for art and always challenged me to do better and try harder. I remember the paint by numbers set like it was yesterday. I mean, this painting took time and patience, it looked so realistic." His mom and her friends were tattoo collectors, and his curiosity was piqued each time they came home with new ink. Rico received his first tattoo at 14 years old, and he was immediately captivated. It was around this time that he met his first mentor and received heavy encouragement to become a tattoo artist.
