We went for a couples massage class with Mary and really enjoyed it. Mary took the time to get to know our individual needs and showed us techniques to address those specific issues. Her style was calm and relaxing. I definitely recommend taking a massage class with Mary!

Like cars, human beings require occasional corrective bodywork, custom finishing, and fresh coats of wax to avoid being towed away and crushed into a cube. Keep your chassis classy with today’s Groupon: for $76, you get a spa and massage package at The Spa Room in Tenleytown (a $165 total value). The package includes the following:

  • A 50-minute massage in the style of your choosing (a $110 value), as well as two massage enhancements—hot stones (a $15 value) and a wild-rose facial cleanse plus a scalp and shoulder massage (a $15 value).
  • A $25 gift certificate to be used toward your next treatment. This certificate will be worth $45 if you schedule your Groupon treatment on a weekday before 5 p.m.

The professional massage therapists at The Spa Room, overseen by Mary Szegda and Jessica LaGarde, use organic ingredients to naturally enhance their wide range of bodywork methods, including Swedish, deep tissue, and sports massages. After selecting your desired technique, melt into the cushy table as a professional therapist applies deep and precise pressure to the neck and back. The 50-minute treatment is buttressed with two enhancements, hot stones and a wild-rose facial cleanse, for a total 60 minutes that bring the blissful bobbing to levels unseen since before the FAA outlawed cloud castles. The wild-rose facial cleanse plus scalp and shoulder massage refreshes the body’s emotion maker before turning attention toward hardworking muscles in need of a kneading. Also included is a hot-stone massage, during which the specialist will glide warmed basalt stones along the back to extirpate tension and to inculcate a deep appreciation of Stone Age spas.

About The Spa Room

It’s easier to connect The Spa Room’s seeming hodgepodge of treatments if you look at owner Mary Szegda. Her background and training includes a master of arts degree in applied psychology, a certification for infant massage instructorship, a massage-therapy license, and training in the Feldenkrais method—a therapy designed to pinpoint and correct habits that can cause shoulder pain and muscle tension.

Together, Mary and her skilled staff, administer Swedish and prenatal massage, aromatherapy treatments, craniosacral therapy, and spa services such as a hand treatment that combines pomegranate cream and paraffin. The staff holds four advanced degrees among themselves, and several of them have experience teaching at the university level. Most of them have served as lead or assistant teachers at local massage schools. In addition, The Spa Room offers a variety of classes and workshops including massage education, infant-massage instruction, and restorative yoga.
