One in every 16 women in sub-Saharan Africa risks death from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. Training local midwives to provide comprehensive prenatal and delivery care could prevent many of these deaths. The Tara Project works to strengthen chronically poor and rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as other areas of the world, by improving their access to safe housing, healthy food, income opportunities, medical care, and other sustainability resources.
The Tara Project would like to train two midwives to serve women in rural, subsistence-farming communities in western Kenya. Midwife training provides valuable skills that may improve income for the trainee, and can help to ensure safe and healthy births in communities that lack electricity and a well-established sanitation infrastructure. After spending two weeks learning safe delivery techniques, each woman can attend to up to 10 deliveries each year. The Tara Project's ultimate goal is to train two-dozen women as midwives who could oversee a total of nearly 5,000 pregnancies and births in the course of a 20-year career.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help provide midwifery training to women in western Kenya. If G-Team members raise $500, the Tara Project will be able to train two women. Each additional $250 raised will provide another woman with midwife training.
