Humans used vegetables as crude hammers until one inquisitive soul licked a nail and realized it was delicious. Benefit from mankind’s curiosity with today’s Groupon: for $19, you get one original value box of produce, including shipping (up to a $38.98 total value, depending on location), from Urban Organic, one of the country’s largest home-delivery services of organic produce and groceries. Delivery days vary according to borough: Brooklyn and Staten Island receive their boxes on Tuesdays, Manhattan on Wednesdays, and Queens and the Bronx on Thursdays.
In existence since 1993, Urban Organic delivers fruits and vegetables to most Tri-State area doorsteps year-round, with selections changing each week. Unlike grocery store chains that offer foods grown in abandoned subway tunnels, Urban Organic bulk-buys its produce, groceries, and dairy goods from organic farmers’ cooperatives, distributors, and individual farmers. Original value boxes contain 15–18 types of produce, with one to three pieces of each item. Amongst recently included edibles were eggplant, kale, local russet potatoes, Valencia oranges, and Bartlett pears (you can see the current week's offerings online). Groupon customers who sign up for future weekly deliveries will also have their $25 registration fee waived, just enough to pick up an extra little box for the amateur fruit juggler next door.
- Urban Organic's motto, 'save money, save time, save the planet', may sound like a stretch, at least until you take your first bite. – Manhattan User's Guide
- They're fresh and it gives us a warm feeling to know that we're buying directly from the farms, organic and innocent of the plagues of corporate tampering. Organic all the way, baby. – Asprey J., Yelp
Starting at two o'clock in the morning, trucks head out from Urban Organic's headquarters carrying boxes of organic, local produce to drop at doorsteps from the Bronx to Brooklyn and far-off lands such as Long Island and Connecticut. Each box holds a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as apples, chard, arugula, and bananas, each certified organic by the USDA. Since the selection rotates weekly, an included newsletter introduces the produce to families with handy tips on storage, cooking, and conversation starters.
The handy subscription service visits each of its delivery zones once a week so urbanites have easy access to organic, locally grown meals. Families can also take advantage of lower price tags than those at local grocery stores or black markets, since Urban Organic buys in bulk from organic farmers' cooperatives and distributors.
