Inside Vivo’s posh, art-adorned interiors chefs serve up a menu of Tex-Mex fare sourced from family recipes collected for three generations. The house specialty, puffy tacos ($10.50) begin with house-made corn tortillas fried until puffy, stuffed with zesty meats and crowned with an onion ring. On a plate of enchiladas verdes ($11.95), shredded chicken, cheese, and sour cream huddle in a tortilla to ward of a drizzle of house-made tomatillo sauce. Chefs fire up a grill to sizzle steak Jalisco ($15.95), a slab of skirt steak cooked with green onions and served with a dollop of cilantro-garlic sauce as cool as an ice sculpture of a dog wearing sunglasses. While relaxing on fountain-filled patios, diners can split a platter of california nachos ($11.95), the owner’s favorite, which flood palates with myriad flavors of cheese, sprouts, salsa, and guacamole. Interior dining rooms mimic colorful entrees, with huge canvases lining walls, bright lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and a portrait of Frida Kahlo surreptitiously attempting to steal diners' frosty margaritas.

When Roger Diaz puts together a meal in his kitchen at Vivo Restaurant, he’s not just tossing fresh ingredients into handmade tortillas. He draws on three generations of family cooking, taught to him by his mother and grandmother before he could even reach the stovetop. These family recipes include tricks to puff up a tortilla by lightly frying it, as well as the ingredients to make the tortilla itself from scratch.

Roger’s colorful dining room and patio celebrate his heritage as well. Huge, colorful canvases bedeck the interiors, bright lanterns hang from the ceiling, and a portrait of Frida Kahlo surreptitiously tries to steal sips of frosty margaritas. Al fresco, the constant burble of fountains chatters beneath diners' conversations while ample potted plants and flowers create a fresh bouquet of scents to complement meals.
