What You'll Get
With today's Groupon, $25 gets you $50 worth of food and drink at ZOCALO, one of River North's finest Mexican venues. The restaurant and tequila bar serves authentic Mexican flavors with a modern flair in an upscale dining atmosphere.
ZOCALO focuses on regional specialties of Mexico, such as Yucatan-style marinades, fresh seafood and ceviches inspired by the beaches of Acapulco, and traditional Oaxacan moles, and you can opt for smaller tapas-style dishes or larger entrees. Be sure to try a taste of all three of the restaurant's signature guacamoles in the trio de guacamole: tradicional, rojo (with roasted tomatoes, roasted onion, and roasted red jalapeño salsa), and fruta (with fresh papaya, mango, chile, and walnuts). Taste the heavenly ceviche tropical: citrus-and-mango-juice-marinated shrimp with plantain and mango chips. And fill up on the braised and slow-roasted beef in a savory chile marinade. For dessert, ZOCALO's tres leches cake is a favorite. Check out ZOCALO's menus to see the full array of flavor-packed choices.
The service at ZOCALO is superb, with attentive and friendly waiters graciously explaining menu items and providing top-notch recommendations. They can also help you choose one of ZOCALO's 130+ varieties of tequila, all made with 100% blue agave. Don't worry, the novel-like tequila menu is divided into a digestible four chapters: blanco, reposado, anejo, and extra anejo (which translated to English means more anejo). Sip on a tasty margarita or go for straight tequila deliciousness with a flight like La Republica Mexicana. The bar is open late on Friday and Saturday nights, so you can try all four classifications of Mexico's national spirit while enjoying the DJ and dancing the night away.
Zocalo is a traditional meeting square in Mexican cities. True to the name, ZOCALO is a warm and welcoming fine-dining experience where friends and family convene. Dark wood accents and earth-toned walls give the restaurant a rustic yet elegant feel. Though always buzzing with energy, the place is quiet enough to hear your own conversation. It's safe to say owners and cousins Edgar and Marcos Castañeda have succeeded in creating the rare combination of authentic Mexican cuisine and stylish upscale dining.
Grab this Groupon and take the whole crew to ZOCALO for lunch (Monday through Friday) or dinner seven days a week.
Reviewers rave about ZOCALO's food, service, ambience, and tequila. The restaurant gets high marks all around, including an impressive 4.5 stars from Citysearchers.
- We had a spur-of-the-moment date night and decided to give Zocalo a go. I am definitely glad we did. The blood orange margaritas are fantastic!... We tried six or seven different things, all of which were fantastic - especially the ceviches. For dessert I had a dulce de leche martini which may quite possibly be the best drink I have ever had. – emilyalb, Chicago Reader User
- The small plates are perfect for sharing, they are authentic flavors presented in a more upclass setting without being pretentious. The mini tortillas were a surprise as well. So good I'm guessing they're made in house. Ther [sic] service was friendly and explained dishes without being condescending. – ummmhello, Citysearch
- The food and service was so great, we went back again two nights later. I'd definitely recommend this hip new restaurant to anyone looking for something new, a great atmosphere and friendly service! – runnergirl4, Citysearch
Due to the high quality of every dish and cocktail at ZOCALO, it's easy to assume that authentic Mexican food and top-shelf tequila are its owners' passions. In fact, ZOCALO is merely a way to pay the bills as they work on their real passion: ZO-COLA, a homemade soda that not only tastes great, but also predicts the exact date of its drinker's death.
Every sip of ZO-COLA is designed to satisfy both your thirst and your desire to know the unknowable, to obtain insights permitted only to gods, to inflame the drinker with the heartbreaking madness of knowing one's fate, hoping vainly that one more sip will bring a reprieve from death, or at the very least, a REPRIEVE FROM THE TERRIBLE KNOWLEDGE THEY SO FOOLISHLY SOUGHT! Also, it is made with real sugar, not corn syrup.

About Zocalo Restaurant and Tequila Bar
Yucatan–style marinades and Oaxacan moles spice up the contemporary Mexican arrangements at Zocalo Restaurant and Tequila Bar, winner of Citysearch's Best Mexican of 2011 title. Ceviches create visions of an Acapulco beach mysteriously littered with plates of chipotle-marinated chicken breast, grilled jumbo shrimp, and more than 130 bottles of blanco, reposado, añejo, and extra-añejo tequila served straight up or mixed into margaritas, mojitos, and sangrias. In addition to its tequila treasure, the 50-foot bar also guards a trove of Mexican beers and imported wines, which, as is tradition, the waiters ceremoniously juggle before opening. Wood accents and colorful paintings highlight the eatery’s dining area, an interior that Crain's called "stylishly rustic and handsome."
