High marks from world travelers Lovely hôtel. We are here a few nights and are very happy we chose this hotel over others nearby. The lobby is modern and airy. The room is larger than most and very clean, has a modern urban vibe, including new Keurig coffeemaker. Door entry is as updated as we have seen here with a tap, rather than dip in, door card reader. Staff is friendly and professional. Have not experienced the construction problems other reviewers here have complained of. The location is wonderful for walking to restaurants of all kinds. The bathroom could use another hook or two for hanging a towel but so far that’s all I can suggest.

Front desk disaster We had the most terrible experience in our 30 years of traveling. The front desk staff of this hotel was as unprofessional as one could imagine. “We have a right to displace you from the hotel premises with a penalty fee” YELLED a front desk woman. “I will not talk to you, only to your husband,” “yes, you have the key, but your husband did not put you on the list, so I will not tell you the room number.” Those were the words of the same so-called front desk “help.” It was our first night, late arrival to the hotel and I did not remember my room number. I understand the hotel privacy policy but whatever messages the front desk aid tried to communicate were lost in her rudeness and lack of any compassion or desire to help a client in need. Thus, I ended up walking down the corridor on my floor looking for the assigned room and occasionally knocking at the wrong doors at 2 in the morning, after a very long and tiresome trip. It is a pity that people who do not care about customers are allowed to do customer service at an otherwise reputable hotel.

Quiet, clean, convenient. We were very happy with this hotel. Room (one king bed) was large, clean, and quiet. The window could be opened, and the air conditioning was both effective and really quiet. Wifi was free and fast. The bed was comfortable, and we appreciated having a fridge, coffee maker, and microwave in the room. The breakfast buffet was good: sliced strawberries, eggs, bacon, pancakes, oatmeal, etc. They weren't charging for breakfast while we were there, maybe because the lobby was still being renovated. In the two days we were there, we saw the crew put the almost-final touches in place (including new furniture). But no noise traveled to the rooms. Staff was friendly and helpful, and the location was great for us; the hotel is around the corner from the metro, and a block away from the downtown Bethesda streets that have all the small shops and restaurants. If we have to make a similar trip (seeing family) we will be happy to stay here.

Lowest on the totem poll. Don’t stay here. Trust me, if you can stay elsewhere else in this part of Bethesda, you should. This property is way overpriced for what you get and it’s the worst HGI I’ve ever stayed (and I used to be a Hilton Gold member, so I’ve stayed in many!) They command their ridiculous room rates because there is demand in the area. They claim that the rooms were “renovated” 2 years ago, but it is obvious that ownership did the absolute bare minimum. The linens, towels, pillows, and furniture are still low grade and crappy, and the carpeting is from the early 90’s. I will honestly never stay at this property again. They are renovating the lobby, so when walking in you might think it’s a decent hotel. But trust me, it’s crap. The staff is very nice and courteous, but that’s the only redeeming quality. They use mag swipes for their key cards (not RFID like any decently modern hotel), and the readers in the elevators and room doors are 20 years old. In the elevators, the key readers are terrible and it’s near impossible to dip the card corrrcrly to get the green light to press your floor. They have a sticky label in the elevator that reads “insert key like making tea.” If that’s not bootleg, I don’t know what is. Room 211 smelled like feet. One of my towels had a poop stain on it. Seriously, stay somewhere else.

Avoid this hotel We visited during a soccer tournament with several other families. This hotel came at the suggestion of the tournament organizers but was literally one of the worst experiences we’ve had. As recent travelers mentioned, the hotel is under construction. Most amenities are unavailable including the gym. When we arrived the front desk staff are not very welcoming and frankly seem annoyed. There was a lot of attitude by a simple question I asked about several charges on my card. When we finally arrived in the room, it was dated and had a musty odor. We found several hairs in the bed and bathroom was not cleaned properly. We stayed that evening due to exhaustion and then hastily checked out and stayed at the Double Tree (which seemed like an oasis compared to the Garden Inn)! Don’t stay here until customer service and quality improves !!
