Hotel Review for Best Western Doswell VA (Near Kings Dominion) As a travel agent, I always strive to find accommodations that meet my clients' expectations, but unfortunately, the Best Western Doswell VA fell short in several key areas during my recent visit. Location: The proximity to Kings Dominion is undoubtedly a strong point, making it convenient for families looking to enjoy the park. However, the convenience ends there. Room Size: The rooms are incredibly small and cramped, offering little space for movement or comfort. For families or even couples, this lack of space can be a significant inconvenience, making it difficult to relax after a long day at the park. Swimming Pool: The swimming pool is surprisingly tiny, more akin to a large bathtub than a proper pool. It’s not suitable for anyone looking to enjoy a swim or for children wanting to splash around. The lack of a proper pool area is disappointing, especially for a hotel located near a major attraction like Kings Dominion. Breakfast: The complimentary breakfast was very basic and did not cater to guests with food allergies or dietary restrictions. There were few options available, and the quality of the food was underwhelming. Guests with specific dietary needs would struggle to find something suitable to eat. Television: The television in the room was frustratingly difficult to use, with the channels appearing to work backward. It took multiple attempts to find and select the desired channels, which became a significant annoyance during the stay. Service: The most glaring issue was the lack of guest services. There was no visible effort to cater to or assist guests, making the stay feel impersonal and unwelcoming. Requests for additional amenities or assistance were either ignored or met with indifference, which is far below the standard expected of a reputable hotel chain. In summary, while the location is convenient for those visiting Kings Dominion, the shortcomings in room size, amenities, and service make it difficult to recommend the Best Western Doswell VA to my clients. For those planning a visit to the area, I would suggest exploring other accommodation options to ensure a more comfortable and pleasant stay.

Disappointing Stay Cleanliness and Service Issues Despite Refund I recently stayed at this hotel and encountered several significant issues. The pool area was unclean, with debris such as French fries, soda bottles, and plates littering the ground. The elevator was out of service for three days, which caused considerable inconvenience. In the breakfast area, ants were crawling on tables and in the coffee-making area, where I also found a dead fly in the creamer. The persistent moldy smell in the hallways and rooms was not only unpleasant but contributed to respiratory problems, including chest tightness and coughing. Customer service was lacking; when I requested replenishment of room amenities, the staff member refused, stating, “we were here yesterday,” which was both unhelpful and dismissive. Despite these issues, the hotel did issue a refund, which I appreciate. However, the overall experience was marred by cleanliness, maintenance, and service problems. Improvements in these areas are necessary to enhance guest satisfaction.

Dirty Floor and Hair in Bed and Bathrooms Arriving, the hotel looks nice from the outside. I reserved two rooms directly from the BW website, requesting adjoining rooms given my family size. We checked in on Wednesday and the hotel didn’t seem too full. First, we were offered rooms across or next to each other. After a bit, we were offered adjoining rooms. An odd thing I noticed while waiting at the front desk is a sign that says Best Westerns are independently owned and operated and not a reflection of Best Western Inc. I hope Best Westerns knows that however, they choose to run their business via franchise or not is most certainly a reflection of them (personal rant). Heading to the room the halls were not well lit. When we got into the room the first thing I noticed was a doggy smell and some large crumbs on the floor. I assumed the floor was vacuumed but either those spots were missed or the vacuum didn’t get the edges well. However, while unpacking our cooler, I dropped an ice pack on the carpet and when I picked it up it was covered in dirt and a hair as if I had dropped it outside on the ground. I looked closer at the carpet (which is very dark) and could tell it had not been vacuumed in some time as it had several different hairs all over it. I called the front desk right away and they said they didn’t have anyone in housecleaning that could come up until the next day (fyi this was at about 3:30pm). I let them know, absolutely not, the carpet was dirty and had hairs on it so the front desk lady said she would speak to the manager. Within the hour someone came up to vacuum, however, the vacuum was not working. The lady from housekeeping was very nice and had her very cute, very sweet daughter with her and she tried her best to get the carpet clean, but the vacuum was just dysfunctional. We spent most of the day at Kings Dominion which is why we were there. The hotel is directly across from the park. We got back late, some of my family went to bed some were still up, when the latter of us went to go to bed, we discovered a large hair in one of the beds to which the bedding had never been pulled back. I was beyond upset and wanted to leave but half my family was asleep and we had so much stuff already in the room, so we just didn’t use one of the beds that night. I went to the front desk first thing in the morning and the lady just made a note for housekeeping, there was no shock on her part, or omg so sorry. There were also hairs in the bathroom which we found later. My hubby told me after we left that there were even more hairs and dirt in the bathroom but he didn’t want me to be more upset, so he cleaned it. On our second day, there was another customer expressing her displeasure with the level of room cleanliness. Typically I would not share something I overhead, but this was so concerning I think everyone including myself in the lobby shamelessly stopped to listen. The one line I can quote from the other customer was “roaches in the bed.” I did not see any myself or I would have run for the hills but just the thought makes you uncomfortable. I still cannot decide if it was a good or bad sign but the next morning pest control came around to spray everyone's room (without knocking first). The lady who runs the breakfast is very nice and accommodating. If she sees you coming in she will make sure a table is clean for you. The breakfast itself is not restaurant quality, but it's free. There were some nice things on the menu. My kids liked the rosemary potatoes they had one morning. The hotel is not new. Looking closer you can tell its an older hotel that may not have been taken care of with minor surface-level improvements (paint/fixtures/wall art). The pool had a lot of debris and other random items in it (earplugs/straw/hair tie). We skimmed it ourselves one day to cool down given the high heat advisory. There is also a train that runs right behind the hotel. It makes loud noise (horn/tracks) and causes some rooms to vibrate. This didn’t bother me but bothered others. I would just say if you have little ones don’t park on the side of the hotel bc you are feet from the train with no barrier. Given our experience and number of issues, upon checkout, I asked about a discount as none or any other compensation had been offered. The lady at the front desk said she would contact the manager and give me a call which she did. The manager offered $15 credit back off of each room (eye roll) which is nothing for our experience with the dirty room and in comparison to the $850 bill. But as of today, I have yet to receive the credit.
