An Unpleasant Surprise A friend dropped us off at the Asheville airport at the start of our vacation. We knew our return flight would arrive around midnight and we didn't want to inconvenience our friend by having him pick us up at such a late hour. So, over two weeks before our stay, I booked a room at the Wingate in Fletcher across the street from the airport. We are Wyndham gold members, so we are very familiar with the brand. Our flight required a long layover in Atlanta. I took the opportunity to call the hotel to notify them that we would be showing up for our reservation, albeit quite late. The clerk assured me that was no problem (and they had my credit card as a guarantee anyway.) Upon arriving in Asheville, we waited a long time for our baggage, so I completed the online check-in as we waited. Then, we were compelled to walk to the hotel since their shuttle had stopped running at midnight and no cabs were available. The reason I mention these details is to explain that we had been traveling for nearly 24 hours straight at this point with no sleep. We were exhausted and not feeling particularly demanding about our stay at the Wingate. When we walked into the hotel lobby, there was no one at the desk, and we weren't immediately greeted. The night clerk was busy getting items ready for breakfast. When he came to the desk, I wasn't sure he had our reservation. The check-in process seemed slow - almost as though we weren't expected. But the reservation was finally located, and we were assigned room 325. We dragged ourselves and our luggage to the third floor only to find a room that wasn't fit for occupancy. The room was hot and extremely humid with two industrial-size fans blowing at high velocity at the floor. Clearly, the carpet was very wet and the room stank of mold or mildew like a dank basement. We turned around and walked out of the room. I went back to the front desk. I began by explaining nicely to the clerk that he might not be aware of the condition of the room he'd assigned us. I requested a room change. He said he'd need to see if he had any other "king" rooms available. I told him we'd take any configuration for two people. Then he began a long, excruciating process of searching the computer, muttering to himself, and shaking his head. After about 15 minutes, he looked up at me and said he didn't have another room. I asked him what we were supposed to do with no car to get to another hotel. Why were we being given this particular room when our reservation was made weeks ago and confirmed earlier that day? The clerk called someone (presumably his manager). They went around and around on the phone. Another guest showed up and checked in. It was around 2 a.m. (an extra half hour later) before we were given a new room directly below the horrible one. It was fine except there was no functioning thermostat for the air conditioning. The fan blew loudly all night and the room was only marginally cool. Still, there was no smell and the room was clean. I was a general manager for a large hospitality organization for over a decade. I understand that sometimes things go wrong, but good managers leave room for contingency plans. Reading other reviews for this hotel leads me to believe that management needs to get their act together. We live locally, but we cannot recommend this Wingate.

Mgt’s Lack of Concern About Bugs and Unclean Rooms Was Surprising I almost never write bad hotel reviews, but this stay was simply terrible…and we’ve had good stays at this property before. For starters, our room was infested by ants and other bugs. I told the desk clerk about it the next morning and showed him a video of countless ants parading around, especially in the bathroom. He was apologetic and moved us to another room for the second night, saying we would also be getting a phone call from the manager about the situation later that day. (Weeks later, we have yet to hear from her.) Meanwhile, we moved our belongings to the new room before we went out for the day and found that the bathroom had not been cleaned. There was a suspicious brown object sitting in the toilet bowl, along with a used teabag and some toilet paper. We had to get to an appointment in Arden, so we asked the housekeeper to take care of it while we were gone. (She smiled and nodded, but I’m not sure she actually understood English.) When we returned late that afternoon, the bathroom was in the same condition as when we last saw it, so we ended up having to clean it ourselves. When I mentioned it to the desk clerk — a different one — the next morning, I just got a blank look, then a smile, and “Thanks for staying with us.” Most surprising in this instance is that not one member of management apparently thought it was even worth acknowledging or contacting us at any point to try to make things right. The booking was through booking.com and I complained to them, as well, but still no response from the hotel. Won’t likely be back.

Location and Desk Clerk only good thing about this location Let me start with saying that the location is nice especially if you have an early morning flight. Pros Check in clerk was sweet and very pleasant. She greeted me with a smile. Shuttle to the airport , but I did not use it. Cons Air conditioning didn’t work. The unit was half way off the wall. The hotel had a horrible smell to it. The hotel was extremely loud. You. Old hear people running and screaming through the halls all night. I traveled to Asheville for an early flight and my husband went with me to drop me off. I travel a lot by myself, but this is not a location I would feel safe at as a female traveling alone. The smell of marijuana would give you a contact high. The bathroom was not clean. The hardware for the sink and shower were sticky. Had I not been traveling straight to work from the airport, I would have waited until I got to my next hotel to take a shower. It was just that yucky. Luckily we arrived around 6pm and we were out the door by 5am for my flight. I wish I had read more of the reviews and not thought they were over reacting. The 2 stars are for the Front End Clerk and the Shuttle Service being offered if needed
