Comfort in the midst of City chaos We arrived on a day when there was a festival in town and everywhere was busy! The reception staff were not daunted by the extra numbers checking in; they took it in their strides and were patient different guests and their requests. The hotel was clean and the bed comfortable. The air-conditioning was not effective because the windows wouldn't shut properly. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful! Staff were welcoming, warm and professional.

DIRTY HOTEL - please avoid Upon arriving to the hotel for check in, we were told the room had not yet been cleaned. When we checked in we found belonging of previous guests inside the bedding so the bedsheets had not been changed. The cleaner then came to confront my partner and denied not changing the sheets. She then said she would change them but after 6 hours, the sheets were not changed and we had to re-complain before this was done. The new bedsheets had blood stains on it. The staff at reception didn’t seem to care. Also, the bathroom mirror had a finger drawing of the male anatomy so this was also not cleaned. The breakfast selection was good, however the mugs were very dirty and I could tell the shelf they sit on was not cleaned. When I was searching for a clean a clean mug (I put down a lot), I was then questioned by one of the waitresses. However the staff at breakfast who great you on arrivals and check you in were lovely to much was a lot different to those who work in reception. Based on my experience, I would not stay at this hotel again but the location was perfect as we had great faculties in walking distance from our hotel.

Comfortable and pleasant enough but rather ordinary Overall, I was pretty happy with my stay. My corner room (I was upgraded - thank you very much!) was big, clean, comfortable. Staff I met were all very pleasant, communicative and helpful. On the other side of the equation, the Wi-Fi was dreadful, dropping out frequently and often (when actually working!) desperately slow. I see from previous reviews that this has been a problem for a good while now. The breakfast offering was OK but not wildly exciting with industrial scrambled eggs (over-cooked), bacon which had gone chewy under the keep-hot lights. I had hoped for better. (Compare and contrast with the outstanding breakfast offering of Mercure, Lyon Perrache!) By the way - it's a quite hideous building - a blot on Manchester's landscape!

Let down and disappointed I have been staying at the Mercure for years as my daughter lived around the corner. It’s always been great, until yesterday. I had booked a room, that had been upgraded to a suite, for my friend’s 60th birthday. I had rung the hotel and confirmed the booking twice and also confirmed, in person, last week when I stayed there. After driving 250 miles, we arrived at the hotel, to be told they couldn’t find our reservation! I insisted that Andrea come down, from reservations, as he was the person who dealt with my original booking. He made numerous taps on the computer, but nothing. TBH, he didn’t seem that bothered. He didn’t apologise or even offer us a cup of coffee, after our 4 hour drive. I was starting to get angry and then upset, as it was all supposed to be special, and it was ruined by the hotel incompetence. I’ve never had a problem here before, and have always recommended the hotel, but this has left a sour taste. I used to deal with Ian and Cheryl, at reception but they have both left and think it’s very obvious, as I’ve never come across a problem before. Anyway, all was not lost, as we checked in at the Midland instead, and it’s been wonderful.

Centrally located but disappointing When we arrived to check in we were told there was a city tax so had to pay £2 which hadn't been clearly mentioned in the booking process. The receptionist told us we would be checked in for free. At no point while booking were we told there would be a charge for this. We were told about the breakfast times and what floor this was on but not where the lifts were to get to our room. On our first night we had two visits from a supervisor (who didn't identify himself or have ID) and a receptionist around 10pm to say there was an alarm going off in our room. The supervisor insisted he had to check our room, came in, and asked if we used any electrical items which we had- we had tried the hairdryer provided by the hotel and our own phone chargers. He tried the hairdryer then left. When I called reception after this visit to ask if there was a problem with our room, they told me that it was due to an alarm, and asked me if I was using the alarm while on the phone because it was going off. I wasn't. A receptionist visited about ten minutes after this despite me having told the person I spoke to that I wasn't using the alarm. The receptionist asked if we were vaping or used the emergency alarm in the bath room, I hadn't. They had no uniform or ID. We did not feel comfortable for the rest of the night because they had told us about these alarms which we didn't hear in our room. Breakfast was ok, but not value for money. The chairs were fabric and some looked stained, and the tables looked chipped at the edges. The room was clean but looked worn. No mini fridge or phone to contact reception. The shower had a glass screen which did not extend so only covered about half the bath so when the shower is on, the whole floor gets flooded. On our third afternoon two men came to the door saying they needed to check our smoke alarm. They had no ID. After they left, the fire alarm went off. We left our room but it stopped. A passing cleaner told us that it was a test only. We had not been made aware that this would be happening during our stay.
