Poorly Managed San Remo has a wonderful location and reasonable rates for a fairly comfortable room with a shared bath. The hotel has changed ownership in recent years, and I’m sorry to say the old world charm is gone. Now it’s just old. Everything is dingy and poorly maintained: gaping hole in front door, dirty stairway littered with constuction dust, filthy hallway carpets, a broken towel rack by the shared bathroom sink, and tattered shades in the bedrooms. What once was an airy, clean and well maintained European style hotel is now sloppy, under construction, and incredibly dirty. After over 20 years of visits, I will never stay here again.

Feeling trapped in a trap house I will never return to this hotel and I recommend no one else does either. There are no elevators and you have to walk up flights of stairs. The rooms are tiny. They have no TVs, no bathrooms or showers in the room. They are shared so if you have a child, you either wake the child up in the middle of the night and take them into the teeny tiny bathroom with you or do you leave them locked in the bedroom while you run down the hallway to go pee. Not to mention it’s an old trap house building, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the horrible things that had happened in the room that I had been staying in. The ventilation was bad. The showers floor was so slippery, my four-year-old daughter fell and hit her knee so hard on the floor it’s bruised really bad. I almost fell and barely caught myself on the handrail , super slippery. There were hairs in their soap dispensers. The carpet felt saturated with dirt, I felt absolutely disgusting being there. I would have demanded my money back, except that someone else had paid for the room in advance. The only thing I liked about the hotel was the free coffee in the morning . Not to mention, there’s no refrigerator to keep anything cold. I know microwave to cook any food so you have to go out to eat. The bathroom sinks where you wash your hands are outside of where the toilets are, but I could still smell the sewer coming up from the sink. Absolute worst experience in any hotel ever I expected something nice and I felt disgusting.

Great accommodation in a great location I have previously stayed in the San Remo Hotel around 2012 and loved it at that time! We returned in March 2024 as it provides a very cost effective offering when compared with other SF hotels and we felt it was a great option for us. The staff were very friendly and helpful and happy to offer assistance. Though the showers and toilets are shared (we were aware of this in advance as the hotel does specify this numerous times!), they were cleaned at least once a day and were very clean and well stocked. We loved that the hotel provided small things to help make our stay more convenient i.e. cotton buds, shampoo, coffee machine, cold water, microwave. Having had an internal room on my last visit, I requested a room with a window and the hotel were happy to accommodate this. The hotel is based in a fantastic location, only a ten minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. There is a good supermarket (Trader Joes) a few minutes walk away which was very convenient. A couple of downsides to note from our trip; the noise from the street generally wasn't bad, but there did seem to be daily bin emptying outside and it was always early (around 6am) which was pretty noisy. Obviously this isn't something the hotel can control and we got used to it after a few days, but just something to be aware of. Also, tripadvisor says the hotel has a self-serve laundry and vending machine but we checked with the front desk and they said the laundry is for the hotel only and there was no vending machine. However, if you need to do laundry, there's a laundromat just up the street. Overall, I would definitely return to the San Remo as we loved our trip and felt the San Remo was a great option for us!

Warm lighting please I am a repeat customer who loves the San Remo. The location in North Beach is wonderful. The historic building is absolutely charming. The rooms and halls are decorated in glorious antiques (think marble and carved wood furniture). The walls are pressed tin. The price is right! We just checked out from my 4th stay at the San Remo and I noticed a few differences that I wanted to point out in hopes that management would take note. First, there was a really awful Fluorescent bulb in the one and only light fixture in our room. The switch has a dimmer, which doesn't work with this type of flourescent bulb. The real problem is that the lighting feels industrial, which completely clashes with the decor! If flourescent is a must, then please purchase the warm-toned bulbs in keeping with the cozy feel of the hotel, not the cold harsh bulbs that are currently in the rooms, which would be more appropriate for a basement used for storage than an adorable hotel. 2nd, there was a really ugly modern table and 2 chairs in our room, along with 2 beautiful antique pieces. I would much rather have no additional furniture in the room than have something functional but cheap and ugly, which clashes with the decor so terribly. Please don't let this special place lose it’s character by purchasing new furniture! I beg you!
