Has declined over the years, New Management Maybe? Beautiful Hotel, Horrible Staff! I live in Costa Rica, I travel often, but I'm a 4 hour drive away from the airport. In 2021, I discovered Hotel Barcelo and stayed there many times. I just stayed there on August 4-5th, and I asked myself "Why? Why do I keep putting myself through this?" Maybe they are under new management because it has really declined in the last 4 years. First of all, Do NOT believe their claim to have shuttle service. One time out of the 8 times I needed the shuttle, they came through. All the other 7 times, I had to pay for a taxi. Which is stressful because I don't want to miss my flight or I just got off a long flight and just want to get to my room. When I last stayed there I ordered an airport pickup. My flight came in at 10:00pm, the airport isn't huge and it was practically empty. I got my luggage, and made it through customs in less than 5 minutes. By 10:30 I was done and on the curb looking for my ride. I called the hotel asking why the shuttle wasn't there and they said "We can't pick you up until 11:30pm. The shuttle only leaves on the hour." I asked "What was the point of giving you all my flight information if you weren't going to show up?" They gave me the typical "There's nothing we can do" line and hung up. I paid for a taxi. The phone in my room didn't work. The room thermostat didn't work. Costa Rica is hot and humid so walking into an air conditioned room is nice. However, once you cool off you start to get cold. I froze in that room all night. The next morning I have to use my cell phone to call for room service so I call the main hotel. The operator asks how she can direct my call. I said I needed room service. She can see I'm calling from outside the hotel and asks me "why?" I explain the phone in my room is broken. She asks if I want a maintenance man to come fix it. I tell her "No, I'm leaving in a couple of hours and I don't need the phone." She transfer me to room service. Five minutes later there's a knock at my door and it's the maintenance man coming to look at the phone. I'm trying to shower and get ready to eat and check out. This guy won't leave and insists on fiddling with the phone. Since he's here I tell him about the thermostat. And guess what he said? "There nothing I can do" and left. And don't get me started on the phones! In the past when the phone in my room did work, I'd call the front desk for something and the phone would just ring, and ring, and ring. I have had to literally get up, get dressed, take the elevator downstairs, ask my question and go back upstairs. The food could be good if it were hot. By the time room service gets to you, your food is ice cold. And 8 out of 8 times they forget condiments. This is how I ordered my breakfast this last time, "Good morning señor, I'd like to order ketchup, salsa de tomate, the American breakfast with salsa de tomate, scrambled eggs and salsa de tomate, bacon, extra crispy and salsa de tomate, orange juice, no coffee, and please don't forget the salsa de tomate." Guess what they didn't bring? Shaking my head. Sorry Hotel Barcelo you just lost a repeat customer. Never again!

Great Hotel. Great Experience. I checked in yesterday after a full day of travel. I have only been here for 24 hours and already a great experience. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The hotel itself is beautiful. Very clean and the food is super yummy. If you are visiting San Jose CR I highly recommend this hotel. The only problem is the sun has been hiding. Hopefully it comes out soon. Enjoy!

A little city oasis We have stayed at Barcelo resorts all around the world. This one is a lovely little city oasis--we spent a lot of time out by the pool, despite the rainy days. Our terrace room was lovely! We did have some issues checking in (my parents didn't have their original booking credit card, as it had been canceled by their bank a few weeks prior) and the front desk associate was incredibly rude. It was a very frustrating experience after a long travel day--she was unwilling to help problem solve the situation. Otherwise, it was a great stay!

A well balanced hotel Barceló San José is the right spot for those looking for a room to rest and a central point to other activities in the San José area. It is well connected and away from the city centre noise and rumble. Close to a highway it may be noisy if your room faces that direction.
