Great Hotel, Terrible Restaurant The hotel is located in a beautiful area and the building is stunning. Reception staff was friendly, although when we checked in we were told that the restaurant was very busy and we could only get a table after 7:30pm. We booked a table and sat in the courtyard with drinks as the weather was fabulous. There was not one person in the restaurant, we entered for dinner at 7:45pm and we were the second table to be seated. Even throughout the evening it got busier but not full. The food was awful, flavour was bland and quality was poor and did not match description on the menu. I’m not a chef but definitely could have cooked a better meal than that which is disappointing considering their prices are quite high. Same next morning for breakfast, it was not nice at all, it was served cold and tasteless. The room was beautiful and clean and overall hotel is gorgeous, we were just so disappointed in the food and we weren’t the only ones as other people were complaining at reception during checkout.

A great one-night stay We arrived much earlier than check in but Melissa was so kind and took our bags for us. She was professional but friendly and she was an amazing first impression of the hotel. She told us she would ring us when our room was available and she did exactly that. When we got back at check in time, she and her colleague remembered us and were brilliant with help and advice about the hotel. Our room was in the old part of the hotel and was clean and complete with everything we needed. We booked for dinner that evening and the food and service were fabulous. We stayed at the weekend of the Blenheim Palace flower show and so breakfast was very busy, however, we had a lovely cooked breakfast delivered as it should be. Can't really think of a reason not to stay at The Bear

Dreadful service Booked for Sunday lunch at 1PM on 29th June. Arrived at 12.50 we were not able to order until about 13.20. It then took 50 minutes to get our first course. The main course came at about 2.45. We gave up waiting for the sweet course. The poor waiter kept passing on excuses. A party of about 12 arrived for afternoon tea and sandwiches at about 2pm. They were served quickly while we waited. We gave up having the sweet course and went home. This was to have been a treat paid for by a guest staying with us. I have never known such bad service in a supposedly top class restaurant.

Check local competitors for somewhere better This splendidly located landmark hotel claims but fails to be 'Luxury', as it is too faded - but was still good value for a midweek break. Breakfast is now without supplements (they have listened!) - but they had no smoked salmon, two mornings in a row, which is an indictment.
