Running is a great way to stay healthy in general; it's also the only way to stay healthy if you're on the course of a 5KRunDead race. Each competitor is armed with flags, and as zombies nab them, they grow weaker. Lose all your flags and you're out of the game, while the fastest and nimblest get rewarded with prizes at the end. Zombies are rewarded with prizes, too, plus the fun of being transformed into genuinely gruesome creatures by pro makeup artists. Proceeds seek to spread good health far and wide—100% will benefit cancer and Alzheimer's research.
Participants in LYTE run San Antonio should have no shortage of motivation. At the start line, a DJ fills the air with galvanizing beats, a trend that continues throughout the course, as various checkpoints boast DJs thumping tunes in line with a different theme. Each runner dons glowing schwag, so the runners form an effervescent stream as they move through the darkened course. The race concludes with a "NYTE LYTE" after-party, during which runners unwind in a party scored by electronic dance music and non-toxic dilute paints.

Friedrich Wilderness Park's nearly 600 acres bristle with dense forests of ashe-juniper—as well as the wildlife living among them. Five miles’ worth of trails guide hikers throughout this natural wonderland, granting everything from easy strolls (the Upland Range Trail) to more strenuous jaunts (the Vista Loop). A nesting site for the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo—both endangered—the park is also a prime bird-watching site.
Blacklight Run Austin is a party even at the starting line, where a DJ spins for soon-to-be runners wearing glittery, glow-in-the-dark finery. More DJs line the 5k course, each playing a themed set, and the electronica continues at the finish line party where the hosts throw lasers into the mix, too. During the party, dubbed NYTE LYTE, runners dance and splash each other with paint amidst neon laser beams, sporting their free glow-in-the-dark sunglasses, bracelets, and dentures.
