  • Facets Cinematheque
A nonprofit theater helmed by passionate cinephiles, Facets Cinematheque instills a love of film in its youngest moviegoers through its groundbreaking children's programs. Since establishing their first children's film exhibition series in 1975, the theater's stewards have branched out into education and outreach, introducing students to positive films and the inspiring stories behind them through channels including family film events, in-school screenings, and the Facets Kids Film Camp. They also oversee the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, which presents hundreds of films from around the globe during its annual autumn run. Though the festival caters to its smallest attendees, its scope is impressively large; welcoming over 20,000 attendees each year, the festival often offers the first screenings of award-winning fare, such as recent Academy Award winner The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore. In addition to their children's programming, the theater also lights up its silver screen with indie films, award winners, foreign flicks, and documentaries. Celluloid-caretakers curate a collection of reels that seldom see screenings elsewhere in Chicago, frequently enjoying their city debut within the intimate 125-seat theater. Occasionally, production-team members or film experts join audiences immediately following the show for Q&A sessions—known as film dialogues—taking questions, exploring themes, and providing tips for removing stubborn popcorn kernels from teeth. Upcoming films can be found on Facets’ website. Eyeballs absorb moving pictures thanks to the dual capabilities of Facets’ projection system, which handles digital and 35 mm films with equal aplomb. While the ephemeral stories fill brains with new ideas, soda and popcorn—acquirable at the old-fashioned concession stand—fill mouths with flavors that have defined every classic moviegoing experience since Orson Welles first invented the snack.

  • Lobby Lounge
Four Things to Know about Showplace Icon By combining the cutting edge in cinematic technology with luxurious seating and tempting food and drink selections, Showplace Icon strives to give its audiences a feast for the senses. Discover how the theater makes guests want to stick around even after the credits roll: They don’t skimp on screen and sound quality. Every auditorium is equipped with a giant wall-to-wall screen, and certain ones show feature films on a Barbo Ultra-Brite enhanced 4K digital projector. Select auditoriums also feature Dolby Atmos, a new audio technology that allows sounds to come from virtually anywhere in the auditorium for a more lifelike experience. You can watch like a VIP. If you’re 21 or older, you can splurge for the VIP Premium Reserved seating, which gets you into an adults-only section filled with cushy, sofa-style leather seats. VIP viewers can also order appetizers, thin-crust pizzas, and specialty cocktails from the lounge outside before enjoying them during the movie on roomy in-theater tables. Even kids get a gourmet spread. The theater’s regular concession stands might not whip up fancy cocktails, but they do serve up a range of tempting edibles not usually seen at a theater snack counter. These includes Freschetta pizzas, frozen yogurt, and popcorn with real butter. The company has been showing movies for more than a century. Greek immigrant Gus Kerasotes first converted his Springfield, Illinois candy shop into a nickelodeon in 1909. More than 100 years and three generations later, the family is still maintaining its place on the forefront of the moving-picture business with theaters like Showplace Icon.
