  • LoneStar Sports and Social Club
Fitness is important, but so is not being bored. LoneStar Sports and Social Club aims to kill two birds with one stone in its coed athletic events for grown-ups. Teams assemble for friendly, competitive seasons of flag football, indoor soccer, kickball and dodgeball, tennis, bowling, and other events, working up a sweat and socializing at the same time. Sometimes things go beyond the simple formula of one team challenging another: organized events, such as the Clue Race Adventure, see teams of two doing battle with both their feet and their brains as they race around the city. Some, but not all, venues permit the consumption of a beer or two, and SCC organizers encourage attendance at post-victory (or loss) happy hours.

  • St. Alcuin Montessori School
Most Montessori schools shape their curriculum around the teachings of Maria Montessori, the Italian educator whose name is synonymous with encouraging children’s naturally developing intellect. And while St. Alcuin does just that, they also honor the other figure in their moniker—Alcuin, who tutored Charlemagne’s sons and turned York’s cathedral school into a legendary institution. At St. Alcuin, staff adopt a philosophy that encompasses the medieval scholar’s work and also inspires cooperation, independence, and imagination, whether students are conducting a science experiment in class or stretching the time-space continuum to make day camp last longer. Even when the school year ends, St. Alcuin keeps kids engaged with enriching summer camps that foster independence and community building. Adventure camps feature exciting themes that acquaint campers with live animals, challenge them to build their own kites, or teach them about space travel. Meanwhile, sports camps and enrichment camps let children explore their passions. The school also offers academic camps that give students a leg up when school is back in session, helping kids learn a new language, musical instrument, or useful study skills.

  • The Sportsplex At Valley View
The sounds of squeaking sneakers, pinging baseball bats, and thudding volleyballs fill The Sportsplex At Valley View’s 61,000-square-foot field house. Each floor of the two-story facility is dedicated to athletic training, evident by the eight volleyball courts, three basketball courts, 70’x70’ turf field, batting cages, track, and anvil-throwing field. Between the playing lines, guests can play pickup games or join one of Sportsplex’s experienced coaches for sports training or camps. Since no athletic facility would be complete without a gym, there’s also a space where cardio and TRX equipment, boot-camp classes, and personal-training sessions help whip participants into shape.

  • Oasis Beach & Tennis Club
Oasis Beach & Tennis Club's focus on the sport of tennis is obvious, if only based on the sheer number and variety of courts available. There are 14 total: 10 are outdoor hard courts, two are clay courts, and two are indoor, climate-controlled courts. But when it comes to coaching, especially for junior athletes, the instructional team focuses less on numbers and more on the 4 C's: consistency, commitment, courage, and character. They view these building blocks as essential to success in the sport more so than any numerical metric, such as number of aces you can pull off in a game or the number of times someone has mistaken you for a cool guy named Ace. But the club has plenty of other amenities, such as a traditional fitness center, pool, and nine beach volleyball courts. Volleyball events are held regularly. Clinics for adults help players take their tennis game to the next level and an on-site tennis pro shop supplies high-quality gear and stringing services. When it's time to relax, take a spot in a cabana surrounding the turquoise resort-style pool open from Memorial Day through Labor Day while kids spend time at the onsite childcare facility, available for free for members from 9 a.m. to noon on weekdays. Additionally, members receive a discount at Urban Air Trampoline park, which shares a location with Oasis.
