  • American Power Yoga
Many people can point to a pivotal moment in their life when their perspective and path were forever changed. For American Power Yoga (APY) founder Kurt Johnsen, that moment was the death of his mother. Though it was a terrible time, his bio states that it was "also the exact moment that I understood how to live." Johnsen had always been an innovative entrepreneur—he created his first company at the age of 12 and was recently named the CEO of a major DNA-analysis company—but after his epiphany, he began dedicating his life to helping people find health and happiness. In 2001, Johnsen and his sister created the APY system. He drew from close to two decades of yoga and martial-arts training, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu and tai chi. He also holds a fifth-degree black belt in the Lightning Fire Mountain system of Tibetan martial arts, which, like hosting a bake sale for charity, requires compassion and self-discipline. Johnsen has hosted numerous episodes of the internationally televised Yoga for Life show and produced a number of successful videos. His Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Power Squad Bod! Body Slimming Yoga DVD, for example, was named the Best Yoga for All Levels video on Fitness magazine's list of the Best Workout DVDs of 2009. At his newly expanded studio, Johnsen and his instructors use a variety of methods to strengthen body and mind. Their classes incorporate heated yoga, dance techniques, and many forms of marital arts to give participants of all skill level the ultimate workout. The team also offers soothing therapies including Thai massage, acupuncture, and sauna sessions.

  • Footy Factory
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? What makes Footy Factory different is our Academy-like structure. Our programs are organized according to skill level with a bottom-top approach, meaning players can earn promotion into the more advanced classes based on performance. This gives them the motivation to want to get better every day. What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans? We aren't a daycare so our sessions won't be all fun and games. Footy Factory is a proper training program designed to develop individual technique. That said, we want you to have fun! Our goal is to make you fall in love with the process of working hard every day to make your dreams come true. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? There was always something missing in my playing career that held me back a bit. I never had anyone behind me pushing me to get better, dissecting my strengths and weaknesses, and promoting me to the soccer community. I want to provide that mentoring relationship to as many young talents that I can. What do you love most about your job? Soccer is the only thing in this world that I am legitimately passionate about. I've always known I wanted to go into business for myself, but I never knew what kind of business. It took me a while to find that answer, but it turned out to be an obvious one. So I'm doing what I know best, soccer.

To actively train individuals of all ages and share the Soul Fighter principal that the teachings, philosophy, moral and educational values of jiu-jitsu will build knowledge to the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body. What do you love most about your job? Utilizing the sport of Jiu-Jitsu to coach youth in the building of character, enhance tolerance, broaden ethics and morals, while strengthening their mind and spirit. These tenets are rooted in integrity and the child ultimately gains increased self respect, perseverance and humility.

  • Hip Hop Heels
At Hip Hop Heels, high-heeled shoes aren't dainty accessories, but fierce dancing tools. Owner Geena Ngaaje encourages her students to don comfortable heeled boots for her signature classes, thereby increasing the workout for their lower bodies and injecting the choreography with style. Geena and her team practice a combination of hip-hop, street, and burlesque dance, often channeling the moxie of celebrities such as Beyoncé and Ciara. Their sessions aren't geared entirely toward stars on the rise, however. Whether they're demonstrating sensual hip rolls during Pumps N' Grinds or the seductive shimmies of Cabaret, they cater to women of all experience levels, from first-timers to fellow pros and animated characters that are drawn to dance. They also host workshops for beginners, which focus on becoming confident in heels. Private parties allow guests to choose their preferred dance style for a customized lesson, and special-event workshops cover entire routines, including holiday-themed performances set to "Santa Baby."

  • Dahn Yoga Dallas
"Our brain is designed to realize what we wish, without any minor errors," says Dahn Yoga founder Ilchi Lee. "If you want success, it will create success. If you want happiness or health, it will create them. Anything is possible, as long as negative thoughts and emotions don't interfere." To make this challenging, yet hopeful, philosophy accessible to all, Lee combined the Eastern concept of chi energy with his own brain-management system, developing a distinctive program that unlocks inner peace and sweeps up brain clutter caused by the daily stress of always having to find Waldo. This focus, shared by Body & Brain Holistic Yoga and The Life Yoga, forms the basis of the studio's classes and consultations. Warm-up yoga maneuvers awaken muscles before 30–40 minutes of breathing, stretching, core practice, and meditation—including a signature brain-wave vibration technique that aims to calibrate mental and physical energies. Cooldown exercises ease the body back into quotidian functionality before a 10-minute teatime invites socialization among participants while bolstering pinkie endurance.
