  • The Inferno
The Inferno LLC's designers don't consider mud much of a challenge, even if it's in a pit. So instead of wet dirt, they fill their courses with obstacles, each designed to push the human body to its limits. Racers on their paths to victory might encounter monkey bars, tire carries, or crawls under barbed wire. A celebration kicks off as soon as each runner reaches the finish line. Live musicians score The Inferno LLC's after party, where organizers hand out competitive awards and more playful accolades, such as biggest beard and best costume. They also hand each participant a cool beer, provided they're old enough. The team's races require participants to be in shape and train in advance. Luckily, The Inferno LLC's organizers supply a work-out plan to help participants prep, combining elements of Crossfit, Insanity, P90X, and other workouts.

  • First Ascent Climbing Services
Sure, First Ascent teaches climbers of all skill levels how to scale cliffs and hoist themselves over boulders. But the "ascent" part of their name also refers to less tangible obstacles: conquering insecurities, developing confidence, and building upon self-esteem. Students work toward all of these goals—both the physical and the mental—during climbing clinics at Smith Rock State Park, a sprawl of high-desert terrain filled with sheer cliffs made of volcanic minerals such as tuff and basalt. Every course is helmed by an instructor who is certified by the AMGA and speaks fluent mountain goat.

  • Crux Rock Gym
At Crux Rock Climbing Gym, more than 9,000 square feet of climbing walls challenge guests as they tackle roofs, overhangs, and bouldering caves. Roped climbers are secured with auto-locking belay devices called grigris, allowing them to safely explore Crux’s many routes knowing their ropes are in extra-good hands. Climbs range from simple, juggy routes with easy-to-grasp holds to complex ascents that may require careful footwork or the flying leap of a dyno. Following a workout on Crux’s towering walls or in one of its three bouldering areas, visitors can dig into Hawaiian, Polynesian, and Asian cuisine at Ron's Island Grill, the gym's onsite restaurant. The gym also hosts summer camps, parties, and nights for female climbers only.
