  • Sacred Thread Yoga
Students should bring: Bottled water, towel, and a mat Average class length: 60–90 minutes Number of Staff: 11–25 people Class location: Indoors only Established: 2012 Registration required: Yes Good for beginners: Yes Pro Tip: The East Atlanta location is across from Argosy with free public parking lot behind the studio, and uses the back door as our main entrance. Q&A with Annelise, Owner Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? Sacred Thread is all about community. It's more than just a yoga studio—we are truly family. The teachers share personal stories, tips, and tricks, and they make an effort to practice with their students. We believe motivation occurs in numbers and by supporting one another. What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make? We recently had a student who had not been able to touch her toes in years. After three weeks of practice, twice a week, she now touches her toes and is able to get her hands on the ground. Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts? We prefer a mix of music with our classes. Everything from traditional kirtan to soul and rock. The one common thread is that the music is uplifting and speaks to the soul.

  • Maison Medical Spa
Signature Service: Rejuvenating Facial Brands Used: Maison Established: 2013 Reservations/Appointments: Required Handicap Accessible: Yes Staff Size: 2–10 people Parking: Parking lot Minimum Age Requirement: 18 Q&A with the Hope Turne, Owner Do you agree with the phrase "beauty is on the inside?" Why or why not? We focus on "healthy inside and outside" since we are a MEDICAL spa not just a Fru Fru kind of place. We don't do nails and we don't sale cosmetics. We help our clients build a foundation for healthy, fresh, long-term beautiful skin. Even the most unattractive person looks better and feels more confident when they can put their best face forward. Our society judges us in the first three minutes we are visible to another human. Great skin says I am conscientious about my appearance and my health. Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job? The results we see and the ability to help people build self-confidence. What's the most common beauty mistake you see people make? What would you recommend they do instead? Thinking you can "paint on a bad canvas". You cannot put even great cosmetics (make-up) on skin that is rough, uneven, dry, oily or just not healthy. The radiance created by great skin shines through even the cheapest make-up. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? Our Rejuvenating Facial is customized to meet the needs of each individual client. We analyze your skin for texture, pigment and other issues that could be health related. THEN we advise our clients what can be done to correct the issue and to maintain great skin on a long term basis. "Going to a MEDICAL spa is like going to the GYM: if you only go once the benefits are limited, but if you go regularly the results are lifelong".

Massage is provided by a licensed massage therapist, voted best massage therapist in Athens for two years in a row (2012 & 2013).[We do] short but effective workouts. Exercises are gentle on joints. Classes are small enough for individualized attention. When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness? Many [women I worked with] were always complaining about their weight. None of them were ever happy about watching me eat junk food day after day and never gain a pound. Somewhere along the line I realized that if I was able to get them to follow the same simple steps that I followed, they could actually lose some weight.

  • Coach Herb Physique Academy
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? Coach Herb not only is degreed and certified, but also experienced having trained 1000s of people - athletes, competitors, to children, teens, post physical therapy and cardiac rehab. Herb customizes every plan based on body type, genetics, history and level. Nutrition consulting also included. Exercise is challenging. How do you keep clients motivated and engaged? Results keep people motivated. Also becoming empowered. Coach Herb doesn't want 'robots' but informed clients who learn how their body works optimally so they can make the right choices for not only food, but exercises and cardiovascular as well. No 2 bodies are alike. What was the inspiration to start or run this business? Growing up an overweight, asthmatic child made Herb sensitive to the issues most struggle with. Interning at a performing arts college where he dealt with performers who struggled with eating disorders solidified the understanding that food, in combination with smart training, plays a huge role. What do you love most about your job? Identifying the reasons that prohibited progress in the past. Creating a body that people say "I've never thought I could look like this!" or "I cut all my medications over half!" are just some of the reasons this is so rewarding. I just want people happy and proud of themselves!

  • Underground Yoga
Equipment: We use Hugger Mugger blocks, bolsters, and straps. Students should bring: A yoga mat, towel, and water (especially for hot classes). Average class length: 60 minutes Number of Staff: 1–5 Class location: Indoors only Established: 2013 Registration required: No Good for beginners: Yes Guests allowed: No Parking: Free street parking Q&A with Jef Gavel, Owner And Yoga Teacher Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated? We motivate our students in two ways. First, we bring the routine to the student's level. Regardless of where you start on your transformation there is always a level of intensity that will be appropriate. Even if you [have] very limited strength, flexibility, or range of movement, there is a yoga workout that will help you make progress. Second, the benefits of a yoga practice can be felt immediately. After each class students will experience increased mental clarity, enhanced mood, and an overall energized and revitalized feeling that stays with them. Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain”? Why or why not? In yoga practice we have a saying. "Today, just be where you are, and let that be enough." Yoga is a gentle form of transformation that changes the whole body, including the mind. The major changes (like weight loss) that are experienced are not the point of practicing but rather a side effect of the practice. The point of the practice is the purification of the body and mind in their current forms. Continuing this purification leads the student down a path where the body and mind become healthy and thus beautiful. Health is not a goal. It is a way of life. Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts? Music can definitely be a tool for setting the tone of the class. In our more intense classes we will play more upbeat music, and in classes that are geared more toward relaxation we will play more relaxing music. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? Yoga is ultimately a meditation. In our busy world we often forget to take time to allow our minds to relax. Many people cannot even begin to quiet their minds. Yoga teaches the techniques necessary for learning focus, concentration, and meditation. The mind is involved in every aspect of life. Developing the mind's abilities will therefore benefit every aspect of life.
