You don't need a calendar to know what time of year it is in New England—just a pair of running shoes. That's because RunRhody organizes holiday-themed events events throughout the year, ensuring fun-runners and racers alike always have 5K in which to complete. There's the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K for instance, plus the Guinness Tour de Patrick for St. Patrick's Day and the Jack o Lantern 5K during Halloween.
It's hard to say what's the best running season, but Christmas certainly adds something special to RunRhody's mix. During this season's races—including The Amica Downtown Jingle 5K, the New Bedford Santa Run, and the Worcester Jingle 5K—runners dress up in their holiday best, which might be an elf costume, a full Santa suit, or the clothing of someone who really, really thinks they'll get a pony this year. In addition to being fun, the runs also support charities such as Toys for Tots.
Don't let the name fool you: no real witches compete in the Wicked Mud Run. That's because they would surely melt on the timed 5K's wet, muddy obstacles. Before crossing the finish line, participants must trudge waterlogged trenches, leap over walls and beams, and navigate their way through a sandbag gauntlet. Afterward, each muddy attendee hoses down before attending an awards ceremony for the top male and female racer. From there, post-race festivities commence with live music, barbecue sizzling on smokers, and torrents of Cisco beer filling glasses. A portion of the run's proceeds benefit charities such as the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance.
On May 15, 2016, runners and walkers will hit Lemansky Park to help make some dreams come true. Participants work to raise money—more than $2,000 in the case of platinum runners—to support Make-A-Wish of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Kitted out in running gear and complimentary race T-shirts, folks share a day of community and physical activity to help bring joy to kids diagnosed with life-threatening afflictions.

Extreme athletes banded together to design Reebok Spartan Races' intense courses orchestrated over standardized distances, each strewn with natural and man-made obstacles to test mind-body fitness, resilience, stamina, and strength, designed to leave participants exhausted and exhilarated. In waves of about 200, runners collect smudges and stains as they perform box jumps, haul heavy sandbags, and juke feral linebackers. Depending on where in the world they're participating, the course may be as short as 3 miles or, for extremely practiced athletes, as long as a full marathon.
