Matthew Woodard studied martial arts for over 30 years, spending much of that time honing his skills in the field. In addition to time in the dojo, he worked as a law enforcement officer and executive bodyguard - he even served on a protection detail for the Dalai Lama. Today, he drew upon this life of discipline when he founded the Todai Bujinkan Dojo branch in Moorpark. Though Matthew now travels the world serving on high profile protection details, other instructors carry on in his place, arming students with modern self defense moves and a traditional warrior's spirit during lessons infused with an edge of practicality.

Instructor Mark Cox of America's Best Krav Maga imparts potentially life-saving self-defense techniques to students of all ages. Developed for the Israeli military, this style of self-defense takes a "by any means necessary" approach, teaching its pupils how to disarm opponents and use surroundings to their advantage. Cox walks students through combinations of strikes, take-downs, and joint locks designed to stymie assailants of any size or strength.
Krav maga is one of the fastest growing self-defense training programs in the world, and for good reason. The official martial-arts system of the Israeli Defense Forces is based on the idea that anyone—no matter the size or physical build—can successfully defend their own life.
The certified instructors at Americas Best Krav Maga Family Self Defense Centers are serious about helping students learn effective self-defense techniques. Aside from standard classes for adults and children, they teach specialized courses in women's self-defense and police and military defense. There are even fitness classes that use disciplines such as kickboxing as a jumping-off point for a punishing workout. At the spacious and functional facility, bags hang from the ceiling and mirrors line the walls, helping to keep students in proper form as they learn to punch, jab, and steal their opponents' noses.
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
We focus our training on movement rather than individual styles. Our curriculum is designed to suit the individual as each person has different abilities and goals in the arts. Our non-competitive and fun environment ensures success and longevity in the arts.
What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
Come in with an open mind and lower all expectations and standards.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
There are very few schools that readily admits that there is no one complete martial arts style. There are also far too many schools that are completely revenue driven and not customer satisfaction oriented.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the martial arts and sharing in the successes of amazing individuals who work hard to overcome their fears and doubts. I love the relationships that we nurture and grow through our journeys together.
