  • Long Island Fear Fest
Long Island Fear Fest elicits screams with spooky rides and thrills orchestrated by Mr. Slim Chance II and his demented associates. Flashing lights and booming sounds re-create an old-fashioned carnival atmosphere as visitors explore the Chamber of Horrors Haunted House?a reworked haunted house that immerses horror lovers in a tortuous cavern of frights filled with Slim and his family of freaks' prized possessions and collection of vintage parking tickets. After a frightful house visit, fest-fiends can hop on the Montauk Monster Haunted Hayride and travel into Long Island?s checkered history, wheeling past terrifying tableaus and paparazzi disguised as hay bales.

  • Tilles Center for the Performing Arts 2012
It seems like everyone has played the stage at Tilles Center. Past performers include Yo-Yo Ma, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and even a full-size dragon?or at least a puppet version of one. But not all of their bigger acts come from afar. The venue also plays home to local artistic heroes such as the Long Island Philharmonic, the Eglevsky Ballet, and an all-dragon chamber quartet.

  • Wine and Design- Syosset, NY
In a way, Wine and Design sells personalized home decor—the trick being that its clients make everything themselves. The studio creates a festive environment for painters (especially first-timers) to create picturesque works of art that, after a two-hour session, will be ready to take home and hang on the wall. Depending on the day, you might get to create a moody landscape or a bright holiday scene, but no matter what, a local artist will provide step-by-step instruction to make sure it's as close to the model painting as you want it to be. Wine and Design specializes in painting nights for adults, who can bring or order (depending on location) wine and beer to enhance the party atmosphere. But kids get their own occasional classes, and specialty sessions offer crafts such as wine-glass decoration. Groups also descend on the studio to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, and being let out of their cubicles on corporate retreats.

  • RISE of the Jack O'Lanterns
From scary movies to haunted houses, Halloween entertainment often errs more toward the trick end of the holiday's trick-or-treat spectrum. Rise of the Jack O'Lanterns, however, embraces treats with its scare-free, family-friendly walking trail, which showcases more than 5,000 hand-carved and illuminated Jack O'Lanterns. Each unique piece is the work of local artists and sculptors, who spend anywhere from a few minutes to upwards of 20 hours on their designs. Those images are arranged according to theme along the trail, leading guests past groupings of pumpkins carved with everything from characters on The Big Bang Theory to Tim Burton creations, all accompanied by corresponding songs. There are lanterns, floodlights, and a few fireflies just hanging around to illuminate the path.
