As a gymnastics coach, ballroom-dance instructor, professional dancer, yogi, fire dancer, and belly dancer, Jessica Harris had seen and tried just about every form of movement out there. Then, she went to Cirque du Soleil's Quidam. During the show, she sat in awe of the aerialists; that awe was so deep, in fact, that she didn't realize for years that she could learn the silks as well. However, one she started, things progressed quickly; Jessica learned, she loved, and she opened Moxie Mischief, where she now teaches others aerial silks in addition to aerial yoga, lyra hoop, and trapeze. She and her team work with beginners and advanced athletes, teaching them to twist through the air more gracefully than a bread bag caught in an updraft.
Earlier in her career, Makaia Gatson taught children how to dance at private schools, preschools, summer camps, and after-school programs. Today, her roots are firmly planted at her own dance studio, where both kids and adults can explore the art of movement and channel their creativity. She and fellow instructor Lauren Wetzel show students how to set dance floors ablaze with styles such as ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and lyrical dance, emphasizing the importance of imagination as well as form.
Even 3-year-olds can benefit from Makaia and Lauren's teachings during ballet and creative movement classes, which help develop youngster's body awareness and balance. At the other end of the age spectrum, line dance lessons for adults cover fluid, repeating steps that are meant to make large groups look even more impressive, so they can scare off territorial conga lines. Graceful Soles Dance Studio also hosts Zumba classes, which combine Latin dances, such as salsa and merengue, with an aerobic workout.
This multifaceted education center celebrates Bollywood culture with a variety of dance, music, and fitness classes. Bollywood Arts Performing Center allows clients to study the sounds of Bollywood with vocal training, drumming classes, and mandatory 24-hour Bollywood-movie-watching marathons. During kathak dance sessions, students learn the classical Indian steps featured in major Bollywood films, whereas krumping and popping and locking take center stage during hip-hop classes. The center also offers fitness programs, such as Zumba and yoga, which keep bodies primed for dancing and running competitive paper routes.
