  • In n Out Self Serve Dog Wash
Mike Kelly had a sore back, not to mention torn-down shower curtains, a decimated bathroom, and clogged drains, all courtesy of his 160-pound newfoundland, Gordo. He decided to start a self-service dog-wash business, not simply for his own sake but for other sore, slobber-riddled dog owners as well. And so In n Out Self Serve Dog Wash was born. There, pet owners find a series of green-walled semiprivate stations that house walkup tubs for a variety of dog sizes, including a couple of extra-large sizes to accommodate massive pups or several small dogs that became stuck together after an ill-fated jelly-sandwich incident. Equipped with washing hoses and shampoos, dog owners can disrupt muddy paws and fur before rinsing and styling their pooch's pompadour with a high-velocity, no-heat blow dryer. Or they can seek out the help of the shop's professional grooming services, which include nail trimming, ear cleaning, and packages with breed-standard trims.

  • Biscuits & Bath
In 1990, John Ziegler hired a dog walker to take his 8-month-old yellow lab Merembe out on regular walks. The plan was to escort the rambunctious pup to Central Park, where she could enjoy fresh air and social time around other dogs and people. Just to make sure he was getting what he paid for, John followed the dog walker—and discovered that Merembe spent the entire hour cooped up in a tiny apartment while the walker went on errands. The indignation that any dog owner would feel at this discovery is what prompted John to found Biscuits & Bath, an all-encompassing dog-care company that strives for transparency, knowledge, and compassion in all they do. A bounty of doggy knowledge backs every service at Biscuits & Bath, whether it's grouping dogs by size and temperament at daycare to balance safety and fun, or pairing groomers' image-enhancing brush-outs with checks for ticks, ear infections, and unusual basketball ability. True to the company's roots, each dog walker is bonded, insured, and thoroughly trained to take beloved friends on a daily romp. Dogs are kept safe from big-city hazards by donning two slip collars, a climb-spec harness, and a reinforced nylon leash, allowing the company to boast nearly one million incident-free walks in 2011. On-site veterinarian services give pups a checkup incentive with the center's play-filled environment, and overnight boarding services keep timid dogs at ease with constant supervision and flexibility with special requirements.

  • D Pet Hotels Chelsea
D Pet Hotels Chelsea are so luxurious, people may be tempted to slumber there themselves. The level of sophisticated decadence so closely resembles that of human-level hotels, owners could be forgiven for genuinely confusing their own booking with those of their pets. But when eyes shift from the suites' people-style beds, ornamental throw pillows, flat-screen televisions, and chic color palettes, it becomes clear that D Pet Hotels Chelsea is definitely for canines—albeit discriminating ones. The center offers boarding, daycare, grooming, and training with a ritzy twist. From its Ferrari and Porsche chauffeur service to its full boutiques and dog SAT tutoring, services are famously high level. So much so that they've pricked up the ears of Conan O'Brien, Good Morning America, and Vogue. And, of course, there's no bland kibble for these spoiled pooches. Instead, owners choose from a variety of custom dishes cooked by the private chef and delivered to the doggy's suite each morning.

  • DoggyDASH
The DoggyDASH facilities boast grooming stations where dogs receive the full pampering experience: haircuts, baths, brushing, nail clipping, and ear cleaning. And, to make the styling process as smooth as possible, pet-loving groomers maintain a calm, welcoming disposition during each appointment. This dedication to canine comfort is standard of all services at the pet boutique. The staff accommodates dogs for daycare visits as well as longer boarding stays, both of which entail three walks a day for every pup, a more fun workout than playing fetch with a sandbag. Even canines that aren't checked in can still benefit from dog walking services around the city—30-minute "fun walks" and 60-minute "park walks" depart from owner's homes, with complimentary pick-up and drop-off for any residence below 90th street.

  • Playground Pups
The folks at New York’s Playground Pups like to describe their store as a neighborhood hangout for dogs. Indeed, it seems that canines are as fond of the establishment as Playground Pups is of them; framed dog pictures line the walls, and the Upper West Side shop offers all sorts of day care, training, grooming and crateless boarding options for your special pooch. Behavior experts and trainers will even evaluate dogs on the basis of age, size and temperament before assigning them to a socializing group or class. The small store also stocks dog apparel including rain coats, sweaters, and jackets. Dog carrying cases, leashes, harnesses, dog beds and treats are also available.
