  • Xperience Adventures
All across the country, people are eating spoonfuls of hot sauce. Straight. It's one of the many challenges participants take on during Xperience Adventure's urban races, which are part scavenger hunt, part obstacle course, and part 5K. They're also, like any good Texas birthday cake, part spicy. The stars of each race are the teams of explorers. Guided by their smartphones, they careen through the city, sometimes on foot, sometimes on public transit. (Route strategy is a major factor in who wins.) They're trying to reach checkpoints, win challenges, and scavenge scavenger-hunt items at a good clip. It's a chaotic, many-pronged mission—and perhaps that's why, while the race unfolds, the city has the energy of a party.

  • Scavenger Dash
Generally, adulthood forces people to give up childish pleasures, robbing them of the joy associated with playing in puddles, unearthing hidden treasure, and being silly in public. The folks at Sierra Adventure Sports wants grownups to regress, if only for a day. That's where Scavenger Adventure Races comes in. The Amazing Race-like event pits multiple teams against each other in puzzle-solving and physical challenge events throughout the city. Teams traverse 5–8 miles, utilizing public transportation and their own feet before they hit the finish line, crown the winners, and head to the after-party.

  • Seattle Marathon Association
In 1970, a group of friends from the University of Washington decided to hold their own running event: 38 of them participated, and 31 completed the full 26.2 miles that compose a marathon. It was a humble genesis for the Seattle Marathon, which has steadily grown into one of the largest running events in the country. In fact, in 2015, more than 15,000 people are expected to participate, descending upon the Emerald City from all 50 states and even from beyond American borders. The Seattle Marathon Association (SMA) nurtures the event's year-to-year success. Governed by a 10-member board of directors, this non-profit organization strives to hold the best race possible—for the runners, sure, but also for the sponsors and local economy. That's part of the reason why each event's course—be it the full marathon or the August 10K—takes into account space for spectators, who can watch the race at several viewing posts in case they can't manage to sling a saddle over the back of a transport bird.
