  • The Dance Within
At The Dance Within, teaching the steps for belly dancing, hula, Bollywood, and burlesque isn't enough. The instructors also want to teach students about the culture surrounding the dance. The studio features a salon where you can get a henna tattoo, and a boutique shop where you can find dance garb such as burlesque bustiers, Bollywood disc earrings, and jerseys of popular ballet dancers.

  • Studio 52
Dina Innominato firmly believes that "everybody knows how to dance, even if they think they can't." To prove this assertion, she opened up a neighborhood dance haven with her friend and fellow dance enthusiast Barb Duff in 2003. Over the course of eight years, the passionate duo has taught more than 4,700 classes and seen more than 75,000 students aged 7 to 70 walk through their intimate, mirror-lined studio, previously named Nia Underground. Since opening, they've acquired a team of instructors to help broaden the spread of classes, which now includes hoop sculpting and strength-training courses. Whether they're teaching students in the studio's signature More than Dance class—created and trademarked by both Innominato and Duff—or in the globally-inspired Zumba class, they work to cultivate a supportive and noncompetitive space where people with and without previous dance experience can let loose, shed pounds, and learn new ways to ceremoniously lacerate rugs. After descending the stairs to the subterranean dance space bathed in soft, red LED lights, students leave their differences at the door. According to a glowing feature in the Capitol Hill Times, all participants, regardless of age, build, or experience level, "move together…hooting and hollering" as they joyously shake, rattle, and electric-slide across the hardwood floor.

  • Belltown Dance Studio
At Belltown Dance Studio, instructors lead movement-based classes that emphasize physicality as a means of expression and empowerment. Trainees can learn the sure-footed steps behind such styles as salsa, Argentine tango, and cha cha, partnering up with a fellow pupil or one of the many obliging mops stored in the studio's janitor closet. Off the dance floor, instructors also host calorie-torching Zumba workouts.

  • Northwest Dance Network
At the nonprofit Northwest Dance Network, the instructors are committed to teaching students how to move with determination and grace in a variety of dance styles, from swing to the waltz. They hold sessions at the Swedish Cultural Center, welcoming fledgling dancers to come solo and find a partner in class or to bring a partner. Their beginners classes introduce dancers to the basics of movement and steps, while intermediate and specialty classes focus on variation riffs and more specialized and challenging routines. To give students the opportunity to impress their peers with their new moves, they host dance nights with music by live bands.

  • Divine Movement
From Divine Movement's twin studios in Kirkland and Seattle, co-owners Angi Cardwell and Jennifer Patenaude oversee a sultry suite of pole-dance and boudoir-dance classes set to the sounds of heart-pumping rock, indie, and hip-hop. Though not specifically a workout regimen, the floor-based and pole-vaulted routines are high-energy maneuvers that help to boost confidence and create a positive self-image. Six-week series cater to beginners and intermediate seductresses, and more advanced drop-in sessions cover holds, inverted handstands, and midair tea service. The dress code calls for comfortable yoga-style wear and bare feet or legwarmers.
