Z-va Day Spa, West Linn

I don't normally write negative reviews but I feel the need to make my experiences here known. I had two treatments at this spa, a massage on one day and a facial on another. Both treatments were good, but there were some experiences with the staff that rubbed me the wrong way. I really wanted to like this place because it is so close to my home, but after I left the second time, it sank in that this place left me with a bad taste. The issue I had with the massage therapist was that she talked the entire time, mostly about her life, pop culture, and current events. I don't do well in these situations, and I politely engaged with short replies. I don't know how to tell someone I don't want to talk without it being rude or awkward. So part of that is on me. What really bothered me were the ignorant, transphobic comments the person made. I came for a massage and I was hoping to relax. My body felt great afterward -- she is good at her craft! -- but my mind was not there with me. In my second experience, I had a facial with the spa's owner, who has been a massage therapist for decades and only recently started providing esthetician services. The facial was good, and she even threw in a free hydrafacial treatment for some blemishes she wasn't able to manually extract. I really appreciated that, and my skin felt great afterward. My complaint with the service has more to do with the esthetician's commentary. She was incredibly braggadocious, talking about herself, her daughter, her expertise. She bragged about selling Mary Kay for years, which is baffling to me. The real insult was when she used a typical pyramid scheme tactic on me-- trying to make me feel badly about myself by saying I look 7 years older than I am. (She "guessed" my age mid-way through the service, even through my age was listed on the intake form that she reviewed at and talked through with me.) It was shocking, and awkward. She apologized, but it really felt like this was a marketing tactic of hers, essentially trying to make me feel badly about my skin, like I look older than I am, so I would join their membership program. After the service, she showed me pictures of her beautiful daughter's skin (again, it was a very weird way to market) and then tried to sell me a package, proudly claiming that she "could sell her membership to anyone who walked in her door." She even offered to commit insurance fraud for me (thanks!) by billing my insurance for a massage when I receive a facial. It was all very weird and just felt slimy to me. A little bit of humility could go a long way at this place.  The owner made it a point to show off her wall of active client files, so I am sure it doesn't really matter that I won't be back. Nevertheless, I'd encourage the staff here to think about how their commentary might impact their clients. I wish I had said something when I was there in person, but things really didn't sink in for me until I had some time to process.
