Sail away from the daily grind and into the gentle, sweet-smelling grind of the Gulf of Mexico with this Groupon: $35 for a four-hour sailing lesson from All Points of Sail Sailing School at Lakeside in Seabrook, a $64 value. All Points of Sail's United States Coast Guard–licensed and American Sailing Association–certified instructors will take you out and show you how to step the mast, rig the sail, and cruise the open waters on one of its smooth and classy boats.

Sailing, like invisibility, is a skill that can last a lifetime, and a jaunt on the Gulf is the perfect way to get started. Don't be surprised if, after your lesson, you find yourself spending afternoons wondering about wind direction, hoisting makeshift mainsails in the garage, and pulling cleats and winches out of your pajama pants’ drawstring more than you usually do. Gliding gracefully and quietly across the ocean in a boat that needs no batteries, engine, or nuclear reactor is a sublime experience. Turning the boat to port or starboard is pretty good, too. Take friends, family, or your friend's family and teach them how to sail; the sailboat can fit up to five people, and you can learn with a group as long as each person has his or her own Groupon.

”Happy Sailing, Dr. Basil”

If you’re a sailing fanatic, you’ve probably already read Sailing Fanatic magazine, but in case you missed it, here’s its summary of one amazing boater:

  • At just 28 years old, fresh-faced youngster Kenny Basil has earned an amazing distinction: the world’s youngest person to circumnavigate the globe solo who is also a doctor. After college, Basil decided that some extraordinary world traveling was the order of the day, so he sailed solo in a WaterMan SoloCraft T Series Hydro-Skipjack BoatCruiser from Waterier Ship Building Consortium. Though his initial trip was enough to warrant notice (see our August 2001 issue “Ships and Blips” column), Basil hadn’t yet entered the record books because he wasn’t also a doctor. He “remedied” that (sorry, we love puns!) by graduating this spring from Santa Monica Community Medical University, retroactively “doctoring” his previous accomplishment for the record books. Happy sailing, Dr. Basil!
