For low-income but otherwise self-sufficient households, unexpected emergency expenses, such as a medical bill or an insurance deductible, can prove to be an insurmountable challenge. Because the family is technically self-sufficient, they likely don't qualify for government aid, but are nonetheless placed in a position where they have to choose between the emergency expense and other crucial bills such as rent or a mortgage payment. Then they often either get behind on their bills or leave their emergency situation unresolved, both of which can push them to the brink of losing their homes and entering the cycle of poverty.
The Campaign: Providing Grants to Low-Income Households
If this Grassroots campaign raises $750, then the Modest Needs Foundation can provide two self-sufficiency grants for low-income households to pay for rent or a mortgage, thanks to matching donations from the Herb Alpert Foundation. Donations will be matched up to $90,000. Low-income households that qualify are typically self-sufficient, but show documented proof of emergency expenses that pose a serious challenge. The grants will help to prevent those challenges from pushing the household into a state of homelessness, and can help to boost the morale and sense of community in the recipients. Each additional $750 raised—with matching donations—will fund grants for another two low-income households.
All donations will be matched up to a $90,000 total by the Herb Alpert Foundation.
