Oceanfront Hotel near Virginia Beach's Family-Focused Entertainment
Country Inn and Suites Virginia Beach is just steps from the city's pristine beachfront and close to its boardwalk, which Travel + Leisure praised as one of America's best. Though the hotel is well situated for exploring the waterfront, it's also within a 15-minute drive of Virginia Beach's family-friendly attractions, including the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, a 45-acre campus that contains a submarine exhibit, giant aquariums, and a 3-D IMAX theatre. Winter is also the time to schedule a whale-watching trip, as humpback and fin whales travel through nearby waters from late December through mid-March.
Each of the hotel's roomy studio suites opens onto a private balcony that looks out on the Atlantic. You can get a little R & R in the heated indoor pool or at the hotel's Aura Day Spa, which offers massages and mani-pedis. In the morning, head downstairs for a complimentary buffet breakfast stacked with belgian waffles, fresh fruit, and eggs. Other onsite dining options range from frozen yogurt at Sweet Frog to New York–style pies at Bella Pizza.
Virginia Beach, Virginia: Family-Friendly City Steeped in History
Virginia Beach's pristine coast extends for some 20 miles between Chesapeake Bay and North Carolina. Nowadays, its 3-mile boardwalk—built in 1880—is still the center of all the action, lined with mythological statues and seaside museums. Though there's no proper "downtown" district, you can venture inland to the Town Center of Virginia Beach in the city's Pembroke area, where you’ll find designer shops and upscale restaurants.
The city has also done a fine job of preserving its colonial history. In the Hampton Roads district, the First Landing Cross marks the place where the first English settlers came ashore in 1607 before eventually establishing Jamestown. The Adam Thoroughgood House was built sometime between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, making it one of America’s earliest brick houses. Another historical attraction is the Military Aviation Museum, which boasts a large collection of aircraft dating as far back as World War I, as well as a B-17 Flying Fortress and Spitfire fighter jet from World War II.
