Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Small Town in the Rockies with Hot Springs and Whitewater Rafting
Located about 160 miles west of Denver, Glenwood Springs is steeped in Rocky Mountain beauty. There's so much to do here that Rand McNally and USA Today named it the Most Fun Town in America in 2011. Golfing, hiking, and whitewater rafting are all within easy reach, and several of Colorado’s most popular ski resorts, including Aspen and Vail, are less than an hour's drive away. Head to Glenwood Canyon from April through October to tackle Class III and IV rapids on the Colorado River, or bike along a 16-mile riverfront path.
The canyon is also a nice spot for hiking. The rocky Hanging Lake trail climbs more than 1,000 feet in elevation. The view is worth it as hikers turn the last corner and a piercingly clear, emerald lake pops into view. It's fed by two waterfalls trickling down over moss-covered rock. You can scramble up the rocks behind the lake to see Spouting Rock, a gushing waterfall that cascades into Hanging Lake.
The area’s geothermal attractions are also must-sees, particularly the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. More than 3 million gallons of hot water flow through the pool every day, making it the world’s largest swimming pool of its kind. The same waters run through the Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves, creating a mineral-enriched steam in the humid subterranean chambers. Visitors can descend into these caves to breathe in the healing vapors, which have high concentrations of sulfate, nitrate, zinc, and potassium.
