Running a race for charity is a great way to practice running away from an angry grizzly bear or toward a charismatic mountain lion. Keep pace with nature with today's Groupon for registration in the Galveston.com & Company 5K and Eco Duathlon on Saturday, March 26. Choose from the following three options:
- For $35, you get one single-person registration for the duathlon (a $59 value).
- For $50, you get one two- or three-person relay team registration for the duathlon (a $89 value).
- For $25, you get one single-person 5K-race registration (a $49 value).
Two separate tests of cardiovascular prowess will shoot off in Galveston, with all proceeds from the festive exertions benefiting the eco-conscious nonprofit organization Artist Boat. Metric-minded fleet-feet take off at 8:30 a.m. and jet through a 5K loop along the Gulf of Mexico coast. Duathletes traverse a similar 2-mile coastal course before slipping into cycling gear for an 8-mile trek along the scenic beach town, all before finishing with a final 2-mile run or lethargic crabwalk. Relay teams of two to three people are permitted for the duathlon, in which either one person handles all of the running or each person participates in a different leg of the event. The duathlon is overseen by officials from the USAT and requires either a pre-existing annual membership to the organization or the $10 purchase of a one-day membership to cover heavy-pedaling insurance.
